Chinese (I think!) Coin -- Need help identifying it

I was given this coin by a friend and I don't know anything about it. It feels to be about 1 oz of silver.

Any ideas? You'll see on the 3rd picture it seems to have some kind of unique mark in the very center of the coin.

Thank you in advance!!

Yes, it is Chinese but it is not a coin. If the inscription is to be believed, it is silver. I will think about this some more later since I must be off to work in soon.

It is a rare coin if it is real but this one looks fake to me.

It is called 1856 Shanghai Tael. L&M-589 K-900
  • Thank you for the info.

For my own knowledge, what makes you think its not real?

Ha, I stand corrected. Then again, is it bullion or a coin?
