Red Sox ace Mel Parnell passed away earlier this week from cancer/pneumonia at age 89. Mel was a generous signer through the mail and appeared on a number of issues from 1950-1957. I'm not really sure why he isn't in the 49 sets (since he won 15 games in 1948, and was a 25 game winner in 1949), but Bowman made sure to not miss him in 1950 by placing his card at #1. He beat the Yankees 15 times during their 1949-1953 World Series stretch, including a 5-0 record in 1953 with four shutouts. Alas, he did have one heartbreaking loss to the Yankees - the final game of 1949, which won the pennant for New York. Only arm injuries could stop Mel Parnell, who retired in 1956 with a 123-75 record. Rest in peace Mel. You were one of the best.
