safe to crack this card out?

I'm already pretty sure I know what I want to do with this card, but I'd like some additional opinions. It needs a new holder because there's a crack, but considering the possibility for a bump, and also considering that I'm preparing a submission on the current $4.50 baseball special, the only reason to not crack this out and just submit it raw is the possibility that it might come back as less than an 8. I'm hoping that it might even get a bump to 8.5 or 9. The only flaws I see are a very slightly soft top right corner, the tiny little blue dot in the top border (directly above the D in DH-1B), and a little snow in the black sleeve between Murray's elbow and shoulder. Some of this could be light scratches in the holder, but most of it is probably minor snow in the card. I won't know for sure unless and until I crack it out. When looking at the soft corner on the back, it looks sharp. It's really only soft when looking at it from the front. So, any chance this comes back lower than 8? That's the only thing I'm afraid of. Thanks for input.

Is this for Registry, non-registry personal collection, or sale?

The snow will keep this an 8 but it's a great looking card.

Safe? Nothing is safe. I have had cards that I am sure are candidates for 10's come back as 5's, 7's, 8's, minimum size requirement, etc. I've resubmitted some 8's and gotten 10's. Your 8 could come back anywhere between 5 and 9, realistically. Percentage wise, I wouldn't take the chance. But, that's entirely up to you.

I'd say unless you really need a 9, keep it as is. It's a really nice looking card with nice centering for Murray's rookie.

I would leave it -- IMO very little chance at a straight 9 - with a real possibility of a PD qualifier.
  • Thanks guys. It's for a non-registry personal collection. If it came back lower than 8, I'd probably just keep resubmitting it until it got the 8 back, but that's a pain I'd really prefer to avoid, especially since I might have to send it in multiple times.

If it comes back 8 or 8.5 I'll just keep it.

If it comes back 9, I'd have to consider selling it, if only for the large profit I'd make. I'm into this card for about $45. But then I'd have to find a similar 8 to replace it, and that won't be easy. Also, this card in PSA 8 is more expensive now than when I bought it. They routinely sell for around $60-70. Chances are I'd probably keep it until I could find a replacement.

I wish PSA had a service where they'd combine review with reholdering. In other words, I'd be paying them to crack it out and reholder it, but while it's out, they could have a grader look at it while raw for a possible bump.

This may come back in a PSA 9 (PD) holder or even a PSA 7. The potential to a bump is so minimal with far more chance of being downgraded that leaving it in a PSA 8 is probably the wisest move.

It's a $50 as is. I am typically surprised to the upside more than the downside. Looks like a solid 8, with outside chance at 8.5 or 9.

If it come back a 6 or 7, send your scan photo of the original 8 to Mr Orlando and say WTF

    Good Luck, NICE Card !

That snow will keep it out of a PSA 9 holder, unless you're ok with a PD qualifier.

I don't like the edges.... their waviness adds another level of potential problem for a crackout IMHO.

    Is it safe?
  • It's my understanding that the card gets regraded even when reholdered. Can anyone confirm this either way?

Reholdering is exactly what it sounds like. They take the card and the flip and put them in a new plastic holder. Sometimes they replace the flip for various reasons, but the new label gets the same grade and certification number.

I've been playing the grading game for a over a decade, I cannot recall ever seeing a card that looks remotely like that with some light snow ever coming back with a PD qualifier. If someone has a few examples, I'd love to see them.

Typically, the PD is reserved for circumstances that are more obvious. It can be eliminated altogether by requesting no qualifiers.

On this particular card, I don't think you've got a shot at a 9 because of the snow. But again, I've never seen them throw a PD on a card that looks like that.
