Geroge III Halfpennies

Just to keep old Georgie on a roll:

A representative of the early (1st) type of copper for George III, these were struck from 1770-1775 at a weight of 23 d to the pound.

Patterns - many patterns were issued by Boulton from his Soho mint in order to try to win an order from the government. The 1788 Droz patterns were the first coins struck in England on the new steam powered presses.

The second type of currency pieces were minted only in 1799 and struck in the wieght of 18d to the pound in order to provide the full value of the copper less only a small amount for the cost of coining. These were all struck at the Soho mint.

The thrid and final type of halfpenny was minted in 1806-1807, minor varieties exist. Due to the rapid rise in copper prices these were struck at a weight of 24d to the pound.
