5TH ANNUAL MPL POPULATION UPDATE REPORT

For those of you who have been following the Set Registry forum thru the years and have an interest in Matte Proof Lincoln cents (1909-1916) you probably know that every year in March I update the MPL certified coin population numbers as reported by PCGS, NGC and ANACS. Since only 15,914 of these coins in total have been issued by the US Mint it is interesting (to me at least) how many get certified each year by the three grading services that report the numbers on line. A total of 5,386 of these coins have now been certified which is an increase of 197 over the 2011 total of 5,189. PCGS holdered 140, NGC holdered 50 and ANACS holdered 7.

My EXCEL worksheets now include the data as of March 19th, 2012. My prior worksheets for March 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 also show the following detail:
The reports are broken out by each of the nine dates (1909-1916 + VDB)
For each date the quantity certified by each TPG by grade and color designation (BN,RB,RD) and totals.

A sixth worksheet is a summary comparison report which shows reported populations for each of the three third party graders for each of the nine dates as of March, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012. With all this data you can determine changes in certified quantities for each TPG by grade and color designation for the past five years.

I will summarize some of the highlight changes this year in another post to this thread later.

As I have done in the past, if you are interested in receiving the six EXCEL worksheets, please send me an email to sjcohen730@aol.com and I will EMAIL you the worksheet files as an attachment shortly.

Why not post the files to a service like Drop Box or Box Net & simply post the links? image

Would save you some time & trouble of having to send them to all who ask. image

Some highlights from the past year.

PCGS now has graded 29 MPL's with a + grade, up from 21 last year. NGC has graded its first TWO + grade MPL's. A 1909 in 66+ and a 1916 in 65+.

The 1909VDB's increased by 6 this year. PCGS by 4 to 118. NGC by 2 to 54. ANACS remains at 23. Total slabbed is now 195. Five years ago it was 168. The 1916 increased by 9 this year. PCGS by 6 to 187. NGC by 3 to 90. ANACS remains at 49. Total slabbed is now 326. Five years ago it was 285. These two are by far the rarest of the nine MPL's.

Red MPL's are obviously the most valuable and the least holdered. I commented last year that there was a net 0 change from the prior year at 945 and with 941 in 2009 and 937 in 2008. Well THIS year the total is up to 960, an increase of 15. PCGS added 11 including 2 1909VDB's (63RD&64RD) and NGC added 4, a 1909, 2 1912's and a 1913.

ANACS in TOTAL added 7 MPL's this year. 2 1910's, 1 1911, 2 1912's and 2 1913's. They have graded 827 of the 5,385 total. NGC has graded 1,567 and PCGS has graded 2,991. Any of you who are really checking these numbers may note that on the OP of this thread I said 5,386 in total have now been certified. Well, this year for the first time, we have 1 Lincoln MPL that is certified GENUINE with a nominal grade of 1. It is a 1913BN holdered by PCGS!

Of course we all know these numbers are just "numbers". Many MPL's have been and continue to be cracked out of their holders and resubmitted for the purpose of getting a higher grade. I have however seen in the past few years certain specific dates and graded numbers go down which does indicate to me that PCGS and NGC are adjusting for some reported changes. In any case, of the 15,314 MPL's issued by the US Mint between 1909 and 1916 (I chose to use the historical reported quantity) the three grading services had holdered 4,037 by March 2004, 4,630 by March 2007, 5,065 by March 2010 and now 5,386. That averages about 150 MPL's a year graded by the three TPG's.

Again, if you want copies of my EXCEL files EMAIL me at sjcohen730@aol.com.
