For a catalog of coins, I find Allen Berman's "Papal Coins" better. It has substantially better (and much more) illustrations, and of course covers the entire period of papal coinage. However, there is a very nice writeup about the history of the coinage for that time period in Ryan's work, so if you're interested in that sort of information, it might be worth it to pick up.
