Has the hobby hit its peak?

i mean seriously..
first all they had was commons/rcs
then inserts came
then refractors
then autos and GU

now we're seeing gu in every pack, sets that are #d (like UD Ultimate), 1/1s, gu/autos, multiple gu/per card, gu shorts/warmups/towels/hats/shirts/you name it. we even have pack-in-a-pack (p;ristine), and cards that ALREADY come in a case (pristine once again)

what's next?? i an't think of much! unless they have a chip in a card that lets you go online and check the players stats like that or something..
I NEED 01-02 RCs of ZACH RANDOLPH!!

  • What about cards with game used sperm....LOL I want my kid to ahve skills like Tim Duncan
  • Actually, the hobby's peak was 1990. And after that, it was all downhill. Yes, the card companies is running out of ideas. I think they need to go back to the basic short print run sets such as 90 Leaf and have autographed inserts seeded at 1:5,000 or so like it use to be. You notice the most desired sets are the ones with premium RCs in it (SP, Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome, etc.). If they made a basic set such as Bowman Chrome baseball, SP Authentic basketball, or Topps Chrome basketball and limited the set to 2 insert sets (autographs with increased odds and maybe a parallel card which has the same number as the base card, but a totally different picture), that would be a highly desired set and will hold it's value. A set with too many insert sets and GU'ed/auto sets makes the base cards worthless.

  • Coming to a pack near you... Game used headband cards with players such as Darius Miles and Baron Davis.
  • autobilia's right, I've heard about that too.

  • I haven't, but I know it's coming image Just like my game used towel idea. Topps picked up on it when it was intended to be a joke.

  • I think even his little spermies sweat LOL
  • Hey forget about basketball cards lets goto boxing they could get awhole bunch of authentic player body parts from whenever Mike Tyson boxes. I can see it now Fleer Authentic Chewed Ear with bite marks in it as a premium. lol i crack myself up...don't tell me i'm the only one laughin image
  • You're the only one laughing
  • Actually, I would love to see event used boxing cards. They can have robes, shorts, gloves, shoes, and all those different things they were to the ring such a Macho Comache use to wear and indian outfit, etc. Just hope they include some event used stuff for Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
  • I think I'm gonna turn some heads with my thoughts, but I think the hobby reached it's peak about 10-12 years ago when you could buy packs containing 15 cards for $1 or $2 and still get your money back by selling the stars for about 75% of book, and if you hit a hot rc, you were almost rich!

hey autobillia you better not go stealing my idea image
  • hehe.. 1990 image
  • I think auto is right. Look how much ppl like topps heritage. The inserts in it suck but ppl buy it for the rookies. It is gonna go full circle to where it will be a few sets per company and the HIGH #s will be hard to get. It will be good as long as they dont make tons and tons of it like they did 90 Donruss-

I never steal ideas. But seems my ideas always get stolen.

Here is a card idea and you heard it here first. Since all game used stuff is required to have paperwork, why don't they create a "Gamed Dated" GU'ed set which will include the date that the particular game used jersey was used. That would also work with game ball since they don't ever used a baseball more than 1 game. That would be popular because collectors will have a piece of history if a player broke a record (ie. Bonds). That has yet to be done. Just have the date gold stamped on the front of the game used card.
  • when i said peak, i didn't mean by like popularity, but by ideas, as in ther'es not much else to do..

Yeah, they should have stopped at jerseys, shoes, and bat cards. That's what made UD older GU'ed jersey cards so successful.
  • if that's what you mean, then I think the hobby's peak won't be for a while. As long as people keep buying packs, the companies will always be thinking of what's next.

Soon, we'll be seeing game used player's skin & hair!!

Nope, because of the DNA issue. They can't use anything that contacts direct DNA.
  • Auto, the game dated thing ahs been done for a while now... isaw a Corey Dillon insert with a piece of the jersey from when he broke the single game record.
  • Where?? image
  • that game-dated thing is a great idea, ive thought of that before as well and i think it should be done on all jersey, ball cards, etc.
and yes they do have game used headbands already, 01/02 topps heritage unity, with cards from the charlotte hornets, yes that includes baron davis

As for the game used dated stuff, Mastronet is currently offering Bonds bat that hit homer #499 cut into pieces.

    Thanks
