1600's British stuff help

I was at the CAMP show in Pittsburgh last weekend and took this stuff in partial payment for a deal... the pictures do not show the luster in the devices or the nice toning. Now I know nothing about these but I went with my gut ( LOL and besides these are my profit so the downside risk is nill ) I tried to find these on the internet but there are so many varieties and mintmarks on these half crowns imageimage

  • well, I don't know about the varieties-- just that those are really sharp-looking Charles I halfcrowns (1625-49) and a super high grade 1672 Charles II halfcrown (that one at LEAST XF in my eyes, maybe AU)
  • amend: well, the obverse of the Charles II may lean more towards VF actually-- hairlines look more worn than an XF piece would

I was thinking VF+ but although it dosen't show in the photo there is luster between the devices and you can see flow lines in the metal, the high portion of the hair on the obverse looks more like a weaker strike than wear... I just haven't seen that much older stuff to be able to grade with confidence

  • From a quick look in Spink:

    S-2773 (Tower Mint/Triangle mm) 1639-40

S-2773 (Tower Mint/Anchor mm) 1638-39 (may be another similar variety, hard to tell with wear)

    S-3366 Third Bust

    S-3408

    A nice selection!
  • British coins are graded much differently , i think the grades speculated on here with these are very generous.

Grading input would be appreciated, this is a learning experience. When you say British coins are graded differently do you mean in England or by PCGS? Would an AU U.S. Dollar be an EF if it were a British Crown? Sorry I'm getting confused and trying to learn.

    thanks

  • I'm no expert either Ken , but without doubt the UK is tougher on grading.A VF coin may well pass as AU here or better. A perfect example of this is the Royal mint was selling a special commem set which includes one 19thC double florin in VF and a 925. silver 20p to celebrate the florin. As you might imagine these are indeed choice coins yet graded VF by the mint.
I don't know if it's still listed , if not i can send a link , i was emailed about it yesterday and noticed only 125 of these sets were made which is one of the lowest ever releases , i got in just in time as hours later it was sold out.
  • I know it's a stock photo and not the coin i'll recieve but it's indicitive of what i will get , with the Royal mint i've come to expect a high level of quality.
In item details they grade the double florin as VF .
