Selling on BST board - what type of PayPal payment?

Not sure if I have the right forum but........If I sell something on the BST board, what is the difference to the seller and to the buyer if the PayPal specification is selected as "gift" as opposed to "sale of goods" in terms of fees and buyer protection? Sometimes I see people requesting payment be made as "gift".

  • Gift means you can't take the payment back (unless you backed it with a CC), it also costs nothing if sent with a paypal balance or you can cover fees if paid with CC, "goods" charges the selling party the fees and lets you file not as described, not received etc.

Just like Christmas.....Give a "gift" to someone you know and/or trust....otherwise use regular paypal

Thanks, guys. The BST board seems like a reasonable alternative to eBay, just with a much smaller audience.

Only use paypal gift if you know that you can trust the seller. If you pay via paypal gift, and the seller never sends the item, it is your loss. You have no fallback. If you pay via regular paypal, then you are covered under paypal buyer protection, which is very similar to ebay's buyer protection. That is, if the seller doesn't provide tracking, etc#, then paypal will refund you similar to how ebay does.

You do have the fallback of outing the seller on the board and that person never doing business on here again.

I do ask for gift. I probably get away with this because I have been here for a long time with no issues. I do understand people being leary when dealing with those they dont know. It's really important to be smart who you buy from and how you buy from. Sometimes people offer me extra to cover regular PP fees and I oblige.

EBay & PayPal make enough money to not worry about the gift payments. If they were that concerned they would have already eliminated the gift option or required the fee to be paid on gift payments just like all other payments. I think it is a great option for trusted board members to buy and sell while saving each other some money.

You are all my collecting friends and Paypal's wording "Send money to family or friends". If they dont want me to send or accept money from friends, they will have to change it to family. But then again, you are all my collecting family as well.

And yes, I have done work for free. Not always, but I have. Just like sometimes regular payment is made or accepted with Paypal.

For the record, ( at least this time) I couldn't care less what other people do.

    So don't flame on me.

I often ask for paypal gift myself, because I don't want to pay the 3% + 0.30 in fees (or something like that). However, outing a seller is little consolation if a naive buyer spent $$$ on a big dollar card. BST is always buyers beware, so if buyers just need a little common sense. If it's a well known poster or you know this poster is a well known and ethical seller on ebay, you should be fine. However, if the seller is not known to you, just be careful. If it's a really great deal, you can always offer to the paypal fees yourself as the buyer, so that you have the buyer protection.

Anyway, if someone wants to send me a MO, thats fine too then no one has to worry about any justifications. If anyone wants to feel protected, wear a condom image
