ebay second chance offer and shill bidding question.

Hi all,

Well here's my story. Today I was out bid on a card and recieved a second chance offer to buy same card. I was thinking ok thats cool I will take the person up on the second chance. Then I realized that the first email (the one from ebay that says sorry you didn't win) and the second chance offer came exactly 2 minutes apart. The seller stats that the person who won the card claims they already have it in their collection. Fair enough I have done that once in the past, but still purchased it. Then I looked at the bid history and this person put three bids in until he finally out bid me by 1 cent and left it. I checked the activity that the buyer had with the seller and it said 86%

I feel that if I do purchase thenI shouldn't have to pay my top bid, because the first buyer didn't follow through and since he/she didn't buy it, I feel I should be able to pay what my bid was before this person started bidding.

So what would you do? Do you think this was shilling?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I would offer the seller your max prior to the questioned bidders first bid and see if he takes it.

If so great. If not perhaps another card surfaces.

    1) It sure looks like you were shilled.

    2) Good luck trying to get a sleaze to sell you that card for the pre-shill price.

    Exactly

I would offer him the exact amount you would have won it for if the other bidder hadnt bid. If he accepts it, then buy the card.

Otherwise, I would report it as a shill bidder to ebay. Not that they would do anything, but at least if he does it enough they may at some point

Do whatever you can stomach. If you were happy with your bid and the card is hard to find, you may want to just pay it. If it is a commonly sold card that you can live without then offer the seller your top bid without the shill, if he takes it great, if not, then just move on. I've seen times when I've obviously been run up by a seller, and have handled it both ways. Not that it makes shilling OK to do, but at least the seller had it at auction. Would you feel better if he had a buy it now at your high bid price, and you just bought it at that price?
