Man, I am close enough to Baltimore, but sounds too good to be true.

  • If you dont know what to look for on that card there are a ton of pretty good fakes out there, I would be very wary of that deal.
  • no problem bringing cash to this deal....

I agree with Probstein... Id do the transaction in a bank or police station, and have a long talk on the phone with the guy first.

also know your M101-4/5 cards...the card is not rare, its actually fairly common for the Era, just as common as any other card in the 20 or so related sets
and they are not from 1915, they are ALL from 1916, so thats a slight redflag right there as his info is misleading (even though some old flips did say "1915")

and PSA had graded the reprint as authentic in the past, so be very careful if you are not an expert on this set.

PSA-1 graded (Larry Fritsch reprint) M101-5 Babe Ruth fiasco

the cons are even better now too, they can make a better reprint and put it in a real slab themselves and no longer need PSA to make a world class blunder image

I listed something on Craigslist yesterday (a truck hood) and it took exactly 35 minutes to receive the first scammer email. I hate Craigslist...

I asked him for a pic and information about where he got it and this is what i recieved.

"A dealer I work with brokered the deal from a private collector for me a few years ago. Here is a picture of the card. The back is blank so I didn't send a scan. Let me know how you want to proceed. I am showing the card this weekend to 3 different people. Two of the people have cash in hand and want to act quickly if we agree on a deal. The third would have to go to the bank first."

I guess two people are getting hosed, three if you count the guy that keeps his money in the bank.

the card inside the PSA-4 holder is a fake/reprint...
the easiest way to tell on M101-4/5 is by the width of the gap between the image and the thin line around the image. this fake is well known and easy to spot, takes 1/4 second...

    this is an authentic card

  • No frosting on the edges of the slab either... Looks like PSA will need to revamp soon... Have never seen this problem with becketts slabs...

on the Craigslist card..... IMO I dont think PSA slabbed this card, they screwed up at least 1 time on this card about 10+ years ago and were laughed at for many years (some still laughing)...

these "big gap" cards shouldnt fool anyone, the too wide gap thing has been known for about 15-20 years. there are also reprints now of the M101-4/5 that are closer to the authentic cards.

this is the fake (link below) that can/will fool more people, the way to tell its a fake is the caption is too dark and too bold (look at the top and bottom of the "S" in BOSTON), and especially the card number. Also the card stock is off a bit.

1916 M101-4/5 Babe Ruth reprint (tougher one to ID)

Is the right side of the slab frosty? It looks like he cropped it down to leave out the very right edge.

The font on the PSA label is wrong. PSA has never used a "1" that looks like that.

    Fake card, fake flip.

The flip has the classic "Craigslist fake" font.

I called him out on it and all he said was, "I'll have it checked out."

  • Oddly enough his post is deleted. Maybe he got a buyer or maybe he was getting too many people emailing him telling him it was a fake. When someone says something like "Ill check it out" after being called out on it, that's not a good sign.
