Question about grading on a coin I have on Ebay

Any opinions on the grade of this piece? I figured AU in US grading, but just wanted to check. Also, would an acetone rinse help bring out the lustre by removing surface grime? I think I see some grime but it may just be toning...

  • I would give it EF at the most. Too much wear on the crown and her hair above the ear for AU.

Don't know how to grade these coins, but looks VF-EF to me.
But like I said, I dont know how to grade these.
Are these prone to weak strikes?

EF-45 IMO. Hairlines do detract some, still a nice EF piece. The meat is almost all there.

Wear over flatness at brow line a problem as well as many field hits on rev but some luster about letters and devices = GVF or EF40

Huge image- I suspect the coin in hand looks better- I see a45- surfaces could and likely prevent a higher grade

It depends on who is grading it.

The US TPG's are consistently higher in grading circulated Canadian coins than ICCS.

US TPG's may grade the coin xf45 to au50.

ICCS would be somewhere vf30 to xf40.

EF40 but could go EF45 in a heartbeat!

Thanks for the help guys - I was initially thinking AU but you are right, there is a little too much weakness here and there for it to be a full AU. I think the faint residual mint lustre may have fooled me into over-grading a bit... time to update the sale on Ebay to correctly reflect it! image

Definitely agree on the US TPG comment. The Canadian silver 5 cents are one of the most consistently overgraded series by them.

PCGS XF40 that looks VF-25ish to me.

IMO that last is as you say is at best a VF25 - I wish they were grading my coins on the day that they "did" that one!!
