My first ever PSA pack submission results- POPPAGE and just my two cents on pack grading

I am new to grading packs and actually did a little better than I thought I would on the grades.

1) NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1986 FLEER BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK JOSE CANSECO-TOP- (Thought is was not worthy of a 7 but wanted to see how they grade).

2)MINT 9 1987 FLEER BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK BO JACKSON-TOP- (thrilled, thought it would be an 8 at best)

3)MINT 9 1985 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK MARK McGWIRE-TOP( Thought it might 9, totally happy)

4)NEAR MINT 7 1981 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK RICKEY HENDERSON-TOP/MIKE SCHMIDT-BACK (only one I thought was MINT that got a lower grade)

5)MINT 9 1981 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK TIM RAINES-TOP(will look good in my registry set)

6)NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1982 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK CAL RIPKEN JR.-TOP (thought this might 9 but will try again with another pack)

7)MINT 9 1984 TOPPS FOOTBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK DAN MARINO-TOP (so, happy because I love the 1984 Topps FB so much)

8) MINT 9 1989 FLEER BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK BILL RIPKEN, FF ERROR-TOP

9)NEAR MINT 7 1984 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK DON MATTINGLY-TOP(don't know what I missed here)

10)MINT 9 1984 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK DARRYL STRAWBERRY-TOP

11)GEM MINT 10 1987 TOPPS FOOTBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK JERRY RICE-TOP 1/1 GEM MINT

12)NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1983 TOPPS FOOTBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK JOE MONTANA-TOP

13)MINT 9 1985 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK DWIGHT GOODEN-TOP

14) NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1985 TOPPS BASEBALL CELLO PACK CELLO PACK DWIGHT GOODEN-TOP

Before submitting packs, I always thought a cello pack is a cello pack UNLESS you have torn corners or the top card is O/C. I worried more about if they pack was AUTHENTIC instead of assigned condition.

After my first submission, I feel even more like that. They seem to be all over the place with what they are looking for in my humble, novice opinion. For someone like me that does not care about grades it is irrelevant. However, those GEM MINT buyers may like the information. I just want the pack protected and authenticated. However, I prefer a well centered "7" over an O/C 9 anyday.

Again, just my two cents.

I will probably renew my PSA subscriptions just so I can submit packs on a regular basis. I already have probably ten-twenty more packs I want to submit.

Congrats on the sub, Nathan! Some very nice packs in there!

I felt similar to the way you do when I first began submitting cards to PSA, as I thought many of my cards that should have graded Mint 9 kept coming back NM 7. That said, there is almost always a reason why a pack (or card) grades NM 7 as opposed to Mint 9 or Gem Mint 10. Grading is essentially subjective, but the variances are less confounding the more you submit. Good luck with your next sub!

    Nathan,

Good job on the cellos. The only thing that left me scratching my head is I don't see any Reds cellos. image

    Awesome job Nathan!!!

It's always nice to get a Gem Mint pack and Jerry Rice is a good one to get it on. image

They are tough on those 1981's. Was the Rickey OC at all?

    Overall, great first submission!!!

No, I am HAPPY with this submission.

I am so happy to have a Gooden, Strawberry, Marino, McGwire and Ripken FF PSA 9 in my PC.

I think they overgraded more than they undergraded IMHO.

We will resub a few packs in the future and see what they come back.

Oh, ok. I was going by the 2-3 packs that you thought should have graded higher. In any case overall, it's a great first sub, even if it's 80s stuff..image

@Tim-LOL, Thanks. Yes, I am pleased and just learning. It is funny how a pack is in better condition when it is in our collection; compared to being listed on ebay that we are trying to buy for our collection.

@Mike- not sure on centering, it was not perfect but the pack itself seemed clean on the outside to me.

@Cincy, I am working on some Reds for my next submission. I will buy yours from you. image

Nathan, I think you and I should pool our money together and buy out Mike and Tim's Reds collection. image

When we get together in May/early June near Myrtle Beach we need to get our gameplan together.

That's fine because me and Tim have already gotten together and hired some muscle to safeguard our unopened Reds collection.

Thanks Matt, When you were buying your whale and offered some of your packs for sale to help with the purchase I tried to negotiate on your Marino 9 and Henderson 9 and they sold within minutes to another board member for your great listed price.

That haunted me for a few months and taught me a lesson.

Jose sold me a Henderson 9 and then this Marino 9 finally can let me stop being mad at myself for letting those two get away.

    Happy Birthday Matt

Jose, any pack of mine I sumbit, you need for your collection let me know and I will repay the favor(s) you have given to me.
