The Announcement on ESPN

It's only been on for 20 min but it's very interesting so far. What a hell of a basketball player Magic was. Looking forward to watching the rest.

Just finished watching it. Well made. Loved the end ... when they showed the picture of the pretty 20-something year old girl ... who was the little girl (infected with HIV at birth) in the classroom with Magic 20 years ago.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Saw that as well. Nice to see the advances made with this disease over the years. He really is a miracle to still be alive and as healthy as he is.

I remember watching it live. I was 16 years old, a standout basketball player in high school, and Magic was my favorite player. I remember crying that day and being confused just like everyone else. The public in general was so uneducated about the disease and just like so many, I didn't distinguish between HIV and AIDS. I thought my hero was gonna die in a few months/years or whatever.

I followed all of his combacks, business and humanitarian movements, etc....and still enjoy his guest commentary, insights, and positive outlooks on NBA telecasts and specials. I hated that his career was cut a little short but I don't think any other athlete in the world was suited better to take on the disease and thrive like Magic.
  • I started double wrapping my Magic Johnson after the announcement.

That did not last long, not enough sensation. Single wrap worked just fine.

Only got to see a few minutes of it, am looking forward to catching the rest. I doubt that today, there would even be an announcement as the knowledge and treatment of the disease is light years ahead of what it was back then. If any of you have the chance to catch the movie "..and the band played on", it is a decent movie with a lot of top name actors detailing the beginnings of the disease back in 1980 when it first came out...it really shows a lot about the lack of knowledge back then as well

  • IMHO Magic Johnson, in his prime, puts Kobie Bryant to shame. There's Magic, Jordan, Bird, Jabbar, Chamberlain, Russell....and everyone else. Maybe West, Baylor,Oscar and Havlicek off the bench.
  • I wasn't alive until after the announcement.
