108 Down--1955 Red Man Tobacco Completed in PSA 8 or Better

Set 108 was over a decade in the making. It started back in 1999 when I bought a raw set advertised as mint by a famous "mint" dealer at the time. As everyone know, mint sets were not really mint when it came down to them being graded. This one came back 24 cards graded psa 8, 2 cards graded psa 9 and the rest psa 7 or less. Through trading my 2 psa 9s and a long process of searching for the elusive cards that I needed, I finally completed the set when superstar dealer Steve Novella spotted the Pete Runnels card that I needed in PSA 8.

1955 Red Man Tobacco is the 4th and final Red Man set put out. This 50-card set consisted of cards measuring 3 1/2 by 4 inches and included cards of 25 American Leaguers and 25 from the National. The set includes Hall-of-Famers such as Mays, Ford, Berra, Spahn Ashburn and Duke Snider. The cards are not at all common in high graded and the Pete Runnels is still just a poop 4 in 8 witth 1 higher. All 50 cards are in PSA 8 which puts it 3rd on the PSA Set Registry behind (surprise) Don Spence and Caught Looking. I will let the set rest at that level.

I appreciate the help of all collectors in helping me achieve my collecting goals which continue to be the completion of vintage and semi-vintage sets with each card graded PSA 8 or better.

    Geez Jim

    You've been a busy guy!

This is another set that I have an appreciation for - and have not even contemplated an attempt.

I was watching an episode of American Pickers. Mike and Frank went over to a woman's house who wanted to sell stuff to help pay for an child's education. At one point, but a quick shot - and they didn't dwell on it - but one of them picked up an unopened Red Man case - my first thought - is it a year with cards in the packs? And - if so - what a great find!

    Congratulations.
    Mike

Thanks Mike. I love the Red Man Tobacco sets and may try to upgrade my 53 set and finish 54.
