Should have hit the BIN?

Auction started with BIN of $1,500 so I asked the seller if he can guarantee that the packs are unsearched but did not hear back from him for almost an hour and by that time there were bids so the BIN was gone. Seller has a great account but really no history with high dollar sports cards.

There are also 5 individual packs listed for $225. That's $45 a pack or $1620 for 36 packs.

Even if the seller says the packs are unsearched if you end up opening them and you don't get a Gretzky you are pretty much SOL since unless they are obviously resealed you can't prove much. Box could have been build up also from multiple boxes that had the Gretzky's already pulled.

Seems like stuff like this is only worth buying from the BBCE.

You mention built from boxes where the Gretzky was already pulled. Is there a set number of each card per box? I have opened boxes in years gone by that had 20 of the same player in the box. Bought 4 boxes of 90 Bowman Baseball in 90 trying to put together a set and got a ton of one player, I think it might have been Sosa. Bought a box of minor league cards once and it was full of Frank Thomas.

I just sent an email tonight to an ebay seller with somw old wax, I specifically asked him if his stuff was unsearched. I git an answer within an hour or so stating bthat he was selling at below his cost just to get rid of some of his stuff. Damn, the question was pretty direct, he didn't answer it, I didn't buy.

With something like 79 T Hockey you are better off waiting for a trusted source to get a box. There are so many fake 79 T Hockey packs out there.
The price difference isn't worth it unless you know you can tell bad packs from good without opening them. Even then a clean box doesn't guarantee you will pull a Gretzky. I have had as many as 3 Gretzky's in a box and as few as 0 but most legit boxes seem to have 1 in my experience. My advice would be to save your money and just buy a PSA 9 Gretzky rookie, they cost about half of what an unopened box goes for.
