Do you think that these boards, as a group sub, could submit 5,000 racks if PSA decided to slab rack

i wonder if "power in numbers" would get them to at least think about it.

Nice thread Eric. I have over 200 racks myself I could submit right now without even trying and those are just from the 70's.

I think 5,000 would be an easy number to attain.

I would love it to some extent, but the holder would have to be made from lighter plastic as a rack holder made like a pack holder would be way too heavy, imo..

That is the issue I think right now that using the same process as they do for the cello and wax packs would not work for the rack packs. They need to find another lighter type of holder which they can make cheap enough to make it worthwhile.

I think there was a thread somewhere around here with JoeO explaining what all goes into designing and making it worth while to create a special slab for something that has limited value of slabbing. I don't remember the details, but it's a TON of money, and I don't think it would be economically feasible for them to slab racks. Mike has a great point though, if they could design a lighter and cheaper rack pack holder (like GIA used) maybe it could work.

I guess I have at least 50-75 racks I would like to get slabbed. I'm also voting for tall boy packs to be gradeable too! It's too bad GAI is our only place to go for both of these, I would much rather use PSA.

I really don't understand how it costs a ton to design a different size slab. Isn't it just a matter of creating the right sized mold for the plastic to be pressed or ejected into? I would think someone could come up with a good design in a couple hours and within a few tries of making the molds you have a working model.

"Brooklyn was not built in a day, neither was Syracusse" as said by Shemp Howard.

If PSA adresses everything in 1 day, then they can't come out with new things later.

5,000 racks? I don't know that seems like a lot. How many people on the boards have racks that they want to have gradded?

    not many here:

    70's: none
80's: (if they count), case of 88 Fleer, 89 Donruss, box of 85 Fleer, lots (maybe 40) of packs with stars on top from Sportsflics, Fleer, Topps, Donrus. Finally about a half case of 88 Score. Remember, they were the boxes with clear plastic (bad idea) on the outside. Also have a few 83 Fleer racks, never opened but the seals have all popped.
90's: Some odds and ends with stars (maybe 20)

I lost interest after say 93-94 (gross over production at it's peak) and went to basketball for a few years, then got into comics for a few more years. I finally came back into baseball after I saw the 2001 Heritage cards.

So when were the last rack packs put out by the original card companies?

The subject of PSA slabbing racks is one that I discussed with Steve Hart a few months ago and he has approached Joe O on this
    already.

What Steve told me is that Joe explained that the cost to develop a mold for racks would probably run around $100k, and that he
did not have enough of a business case to justify that kind of investment at this time.

If that cost is accurate, then at $10 net profit per rack it would require the grading of around 10,000 racks just to get to a break-even point
for PSA (and that's just considering the cost of the molds). I can't see PSA making that kind of investment for a brealk-even return. It would
probably take several years for them to recover the cost.

While I wish that PSA would step up to grading racks, based on these kinds of economics I think we'll still be discussing this subject in 2013
    and beyond.
