Claimed #1 1972 Topps FB Registry spot today

After 6 years Ive finally reached the pinnacle on the PSA Set Registry for my 1972 Topps Football Set.
I finally found the high number George Blanda to complete the set. After 2 years of looking for a PSA 9 I had to
settle for a PSA 8.

The set started almost 7 years ago when I decided to have a few of the cards from my raw 1972 set that I had already been
working on for well over 20 years.

Most of the cards are from my original set. After exhausting that resorce I had to go to the secondary market for the remaining cards.
I refused to buy sub-standard cards base on the PSA Flips or I may have obtained this level much sooner. I still hold cards in the set that I believe
are nicer than many with a higher grade on the flips.

Does PSA give you any kind of award for reaching the #1 Spot on the Registry?

There are a couple big spenders moving up the list, so I may not hold the spot for long, as well the set I dethroned is only a .02 down and could easily upgrade
and reclaim the spot, but thats OK. Im not going to get caught up chasing "Crazy Money" cards. I do have two PSA 7's in the set that I would like to upgrade to 8's or better.
One is #58 Ken Bowman, Likely one of the toughest cards in the entire set and the other is #157 Emmitt Thomas Rookie which Ive had several opprotunities at nice 9's but refuse to give upwards of $200 for a borderline HOFer and basically a Common to me.

Roger Staubach (The Greatest QB Ive ever seen play) and Seventies Cowboys are my childhood heroes, so the 72 set has always been dear to my heart. The cards are Iconic to me. My goal was never the #1 spot on the registry. In fact the PSA registry was years away from existance when I began the quest to build one of the Most beautiful 72 sets in the hobby. I felt I had reached that goal with the raw set I spent years tweeking. Ive built the set multiple times over searching for the most perfect cards for my set.

How It got to this point seems to be "Accidently on Purpose" So with out any further ado, I present some of my favorites from The #1 current 1972 Topps Football set.

Dog - you are the 72 King. Awesome set you put together.

Although my set is not 100% graded, or registered, I think it is right up there as well. Just love the 72's. Been working on it for 11 years myself.

Oh, BTW - I'm down to just 9 of these bastages to finish this monster.

Looking for NM or better (graded or raw) cards. Must be centered. can you help?

    291 - Spurrier
    305 - Kanicki
    306 - Pearson
    308 - Morrall
    316 - Wright
    329 - ?
    331 - Morris
    336 - Marshall
    341 - Butkus IA
    350 - Jackson

    Cheers, Bob

    Congrats thats a beautiful set.
  • Thanks for the Thumbs up guys!

Believe it or not I actually had another PSA 8 Roger just about like the one I have here. It was a very tough call on which one to keep.
I believe both could pull the 8.5 grade. The other one I auctioned on ebay pulled $700! Yes it did!

Bobs : I know you have been hard at that killer set of yours and I believe I dealt you a few cards a couple years ago?
I still maintain a raw set myself, missing some of the high numbers. While I do still have some nicer NM or better cards, unfortunately
Not any from your list. I know how fustrating it can be when you get that close. Card #329 is John Niland.

Now if I can just find the remaining cards for my #1 SGC 1971 Topps Football Set, a much tougher task.

Those are some bad ass cards. The Warfield AP card is cool!

They do send out certificates for the number one sets each year. I believe it closes at the end of May so if you are still number one, you will get a certificate.

Awesomeness. You are truly the top dog. I am way behind and working towards it think I am 13- or 14 on current list Chipping away. My dad bought me rack packs and I have 3 first series sets raw and a full 3rd series raw and my graded set. That tie with my Dad has caused me to chase this set with not your abandon but nonetheless abandon.

Since you mentioned it I have both your upgrades in nice PSA 8 form Thomas and Bowman. If you have extra PSA 9's or 8's I would consider a trade, but as you say examples of both of these are rare rare rare

    CONGRATS on your accomplishment

Very nice. Impressive work and I appreciate the scans as well. Interesting that you have very few 10's. I assume you feel the additional cost is not worth the small (if any) difference from a 9? - Kevin

I normally do not like SGC holders but those cards look great in them... also congrats on the 72 Set!

Back in 2005 I had this set completed in 8.17 when 8's were going for $$9-$12 for a common. Sold the set for just under $6,000. I could rebuy that set for much cheaper than that in 8's now so I got lucky.

I know the guy in second place personally. He does not post on here but he is searching for some upgrades on his set but he is not running for the award so I don't think you have to worry about LU Champions running up on you.

Congrats on the set. The Bowman is a tough card. I have a dozen minty raw ones but not good enough centering for 9's. My PSA 8 is dead centered though.

  • Well I had the #1 spot for all of two days or so! Some guy name "Cardboardkid" came out of nowhere and laid almost a 8.9 set on the registry. SOOO
    Now I am again #2

Oh well, Easy come, Easy go Im still content with my set no matter where it's at on the Registry.

CARDS651: Your right. I could never justify spending stupid money on 10's. They really are only 9's on any given day to me and are mainly fools gold for Registry nuts.

THOSEBACKPAGES: Im not sure when I will crack them out yet? but yes i would like to return them to the binder to keep my sets all in order and have easy access to enjoy them
Much easier. Its a whole lotta plastic to crack though.

CALIFORINACARD3(Barry) Hi Barry, The Emmitt Thomas is far from rare. I just won't give that kind of Money for a card I consider a Common. HOF or Not. Now the Bowman card I would be interested in. I will PM you

  • Very nice cards and congratulations on your brief achievememt. I found out on the coin registry that you can't fight the deep pockets.

But you have more fiber than that #1.

Nice work though, you should have held back until the day before the awards. Not that it would change anything, unless you caught the guy sleeping.

    John,
Congratulations on your fine set. A true labor of love for you. I know quality is more important to you
than a number ranking. I'm sure if the registry gave out eye appeal awards, your set would
garner the number one spot. Those are some really stellar cards you posted.
Way to go on your great set!!

John - It's still a great set and you are doing it the right way. I try to stay away from 10's for the reasons you note but I often get caught up in the chase for a higher average. Your set will serve as a guiding principle! Good luck. - Kevin

Is there a minimum number of participants required? I've been #1 for a while now on several sets and have never received a certificate.

The three I'm number one on are complete and have been so for as long as they've been on the registry.
  • They gave you the little icons next to your sets noting that they were #1 for the year. I think you have to request the certificates.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

  • Bigred, Congrat's from from one of the originals !!! I only made it to #2 myself before retiring and selling most of it. This is still my favorite all-time set and I have actually begun another set. Keep plugging away and maybe I'll see you in a couple of years !!! image

  • Yep, I was sitting pretty for #3 all time on a registry and this guy Doanld E. Spence came in and busted me down to #5. Soooo I took my PSA's, cracked them and sent them to SGC, they all came back same grade or higher, non lower, and now the same set is sitting #1 on the SGC Registry. I like the SGC cases a whole lot better anyway...so screw you Donald E. Spence. And you can guess the rest.

    John,

Sorry your reign was so brief. Your love for, and dedication to, this set is unsurpassed. We've had a couple of interesting discussions about it in the past.

Keep plugging away on this beauty. Satisfaction is it's own reward.
