Rick Probstein

The guy is just amazing.

Question #1 for Rick.........

Rick, how much does your feedback go up per day ? It looks like you get 500+ positive feedback per day.

Question #2 for Rick.........

How many items do you ship per day ? I would love to spend a day (just kidding) at your place of operation to see how it all works.
You should really do a youtube video or something showing the start of your day until the end of your day. It must be CRAZY !!!

Question #3 for Rick..........

You must have the best wife in the world, and you must get exhuasted, unless you have a good relationship with Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts.
Think of.....A. Opening packages B. Scanning and listing items C. Communicating with buyers/sellers D. Packing and shipping E. Shows

Anyway, God bless you. We all think very highly of you here.

  • I don't believe he is a one man show. I think he has a small crew of people helping out.
  • I mail 5-10 packages a day....may be 15 at best on a Monday due to the Sunday closing of the USPS. I can't imagine boxing up and mailing 50+ let along 500+. The fact he does it so professionally is the best part about it.

Yep, Rick is good. I have bought big (expensive) and little (cheap) items from him and they always get packed good and arrive save. One question, what should I do with all those little yellow chips I have recieved?

Rick is the Chuck Norris of cards.

Rick doesn't rip, the packs see him an the automatically open at the mere mention of him.

Rick is truly the ONLY 1/1.

    That's funny...

I believe he now employees 5 workers maybe 6. Full time.

He'll still take the time for a phone call, shoot the breeze, although when I do, he is typing or packaging at the same time. He is a machine!

There was once a Rick Probstein card. It was discontinued, because no one collects Rick and lives.

Heard Ted Williams is in suspended animation? Yeah, in Rick's attic.

The extra wild card? Rick's idea.

Baseball players started taking steroids to keep up with Rick.

Rick once struck out three batters. On one pitch.

I too am a believer in Rick!

I have sold off almost $7k in vintage graded cards the past few weeks with him and that's just trimming down unwanteds

The trade off to me can't be any better, ship out once and get a check in a few days.

No posting, bartering, pm'ing, emailing, listing, no hassling, and I don't have to live at USPS

I never figured that I could of gotten some of the returns that his auctions brought, amazing to me

Great reputation and operation in my book!

    Thanks again Rick

    Here's just one example:

I understand these guys have a following, and that might get extra eyeballs. But I guess I am still skeptical a little. If you yourself run an auction on Ebay, and the same people are looking at the cards, don't you think the same bidders would see the card if you auctioned it off just as good as if Rick auctioned it off?? I am not anti consignors by no means - I have used them in the past. I am just playing devils advocate here......

To be really honest, I don't really care to think about it or try to find out.
I am sure that if one wanted to invest in a high quality Epson scanner and spend ungodly hours setting up auctions and shipping, they could most likely get
close to same results. The right keywording, auction timing, and descriptions go a long way.
No way do I want to devote any of my time to doing the such. Although, I can see how some would enjoy it.
Also, there would be the guarantee of dealing with numbskulls and NPB's, paypal claims, emails, bubblers, bribers, dingers, and liars. All set image

You use the word skeptical. Skeptical how? Results are results period. BIN's and auctions ending are facts. There have been numerous posts from dozens of members who are extremely happy with the final prices they are getting.

There is really nothing to be skeptical about. I guess I don't understand that word. You don't believe it? You don't understand it?

Sounds like your ready to stop wasting time doing your own listings as you realize it's more efficient to consign your items. Take a small batch of 50 items and give it a shot.

The fact that he's been on EBay for a very long time, he now is the #1 sportscard seller on EBay, that his customer service is second to none, and his ability to list, collect, and ship is second to none, gets better prices.

    Can't avoid facts and statistics.

  • The keys to Rick's successful business:

    1. Customer Service - for BOTH the buyers and the consignors. That is key.
    2. Efficiency - rapid, accurate listings and shiping.
    3. Honesty/Trust - I would rate Rick right up there with Steve as far as honesty/integrity. Sure, it is a business but they also have their name at stake. They both will do anything to make it right.
    4. Excellent scans. They really do make a difference!

I've bought numerous cards from Rick over the years...and it impresses me everything how rapidly things are shipped.

I was planning on sending Rick some cards. I was just playing devils advocate with my statement. I was saying, all things being equal (ie 100% postive feedback, fast shipping, etc), if you run an auction with clear, crisp scans, shouldn't there really be no difference between sell price between probstein, and some of the other sellers of vintage cards on Ebay?

I think the sheer volume of items he has does promote multiple purchases and therefore bids. I will pay a little more to buy 2-3 cards from one dealer rather than from multiple dealers, the convenience is worth more to me than a few bucks.

Rick once won a Texas Hold 'Em tournament .... without ever looking at his cards

  • << <i>Rick once won a Texas Hold 'Em tournament .... without ever looking at his cards >>

I've actually done this. The tournament only had six guys in it. After a long day of golfing and consuming many adult beverages, me and some of the guys ended up playing cards all night long in the clubhouse. I'm not sure if this means I'm good or if we were all very very very tipsy.

I've also been dealt the rarest hand ever, a suited pocket pair. We use two decks to speed the game along. One red card got mixed in with the blue deck and I was dealt one blue and one red card. Misdeal was called, I turned them over and they were both a six of spades

  • Are you kidding me? to who Bernie Madoff?
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
That's actually not along the same lines. That's actually pretty out if line of not downright slanderous.

One was a Ponzi scheme, whereas Rick has gotten people their money every time-- and promptly. Not exactly analogous.
  • I wasn't referring to Rick. I was just pointing out that just because you meet a person and they appear one way one day it could change the next. I was not trying to say anything about Rick, I don't know him and have never dealt with him. Maybe it was a bad example but not meant to harm him.

  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
I just fail to see how a baseball card consignors like Rick or PWCC can be likened to a Ponzi schemer. You send them your cards, they scan and sell them online, and their feedback is more comforting to buyers on eBay than a smaller seller. Consignors are also good if you have a demanding career and can't take the time to sell your stuff online yourself. From there to Madoff? It's just a heck of a claim with no evidence. If I were likened to an infamous criminal with no ironclad evidence i'd be pretty pissed.
  • O.k., I will apologize if my earlier post was taken that I was comparing Rick to Bernie... That was not my intent.

Admittedly, I'm a little slow and easily could have missed something. Did someone really just compare an eBay consignment seller to Bernie Madoff? Seriously? Or did I miss something?

Too true, Paul. Totally agree. Words can definitely have impact and a bunch of us were just discussing yesterday how it's so easy and often unintentional to slip into hyperbole or just colorful language-- and it can unwittingly wind up hurting reputations irreparably. People reading for the first time will just recall something negative was said, and have a knee jerk to that. When online or even emailing or texting these days I try to pause and review whatever I write before hitting send; I was texting with a work colleague a few months ago and something totally innocuous I wrote that if spoken in person or on phone wouldnt have amounted to anything, wound up causing a whole beef! Was so silly.
