Parsippany NJ Coin Show Report

Today was the monthly Parsippany, NJ coin show featuring over 100 dealers. There is a wide selection of coins at this show from raw morgans all the way to early gold. There is also lots of bullion and paper money. I was actually set up today as part of my new website business venture. Sales were pretty much non existant as it was my first time setting up. I sold some silver bullion and a gold ring. Floor traffic was heavy as usual from the get go. It seems there were more lookers than buyers though.
I was set up with board member Joebb21. Other board members I saw included Artarian, 66RB, DaveG, ColnelJessup and a few others. Sadly I found out that the reason my friend and I got this table is because the dealer ( and board member centmaster) had unexpectedly passed. A sad way to get the table. I will be set up every month for the near future so please swing by and say hello if you are there. It will be against the far left wall when you walk into the main room.
The highlight of the show was speaking with two younger kids who came to the show with their father. Both were starting collecting and it was nice to see younger numismatics. I gave them both a small gift to keep their interest up, and showed them a libertas medal I had with me and explained the history behind it. I saw some very nice coins sell at the show, and the highlight of that was a High Relief Saint in PCGS MS64 CAC! What an amazing looking coin! A dealer friend of mine sold many CAC'd Carson city gold pieces. Silver was trading for around $35 to $36 per ounce. There were some nice quality coins at the show!
I picked up two newps for my type set. One is a Peace Dollar in an OGH graded MS65 CAC with amazing luster. The price was very resonable for such an amazing coin that I couldnt pass it up. The second is a coin I fell in love with as soon as I saw it. It is a 1895 Barber Quarter PCGS MS65 CAC from the Dale Friend collection. The coin has beautiful toning and prooflike surfaces. As much as I tried, I was unable to capture the beauty of this in an image. Its one I am seriously thinking about getting true viewed. I had to pay a premium for it, but we all know you cant buy PQ coins without paying up for them. Images below.

An image with direct light to show the toning and PL surfaces.

<< <i>I remember that 1896 Ankur, quite a specimen, congrats! >>
Typo! 1895. My mistake.
Artarian...we spoke for like 10 minutes! You told me about your book!
Ryk: Nope. My perspective is the same. There is pretty much 1 nice coin for every 50 nice ones.

<< <i>Thanks for the report. Now that you are setting up, has your perspective in buying and selling coins at a show changed? >>
I think the most interesting thing Im seeing in the market is the shift to new standards of coin pricing.
Nice cac coins I had to pay strong %'s over greysheet to aquire and the demand for them was even stronger.
Some coins like an 1875 20c ngc pf64 cac I sold had such large demand that price was almost a non issue.
With only 25-35 coins stickered per date in all grades, the problem becomes finding another to replace it with.
That's very interesting. I would have thought that the demand for such a coin would be virtually non-existent.

It was a gorgeous coin in a NGC Fatty holder.

While I like the toning on the 1895 barber quarter, I suspect some of the fussier forum members would have an issue with the obv fingerprint toning.
Not an an easy date to find attractive as well as semi proof like.

20 cent pieces are like noses. Everyone has one, and many of them look kinda funny.

I'd be happy to weigh in on this...

If your opinion costs $10, how much do we have to pay for you to keep it to yourself?

That Peace dollar looks really nice.
I am planning to be there for the April show. Is it always on the first Sunday of the month?

<< <i>I don't think I've seen a single ugly coin pedigreed to Dale Friend...OK, I'm sure somebody has one..fire away.
Leon, neither have I. I thought Dale's collections outshone all of their competitors !!
He has a great eye and a great network of dealers who offer him the choicest items !!
AnkurJ: Fantastic pair you found; no wonder so many of my
New Jersey friends love that show, there is always something
stunning available for sale.
