Anyone can take the initiative to start a rip. If you feel a need for rules, that's your choice.

What, this wasn't a sanctioned box group rip??? I'll have to report this to the proper authorities. Trent, you have the emergency number, right?

Out of curiosity, what is the reasonable number of Gretzky's one can expect from the box?

One or two from the factory, if you're getting a box that was never tampered with. Meaning, someone bought a few boxes, pulled the Gretzky,
and then combined packs from other boxes. Then you're looking at one per box if those shanannigans took place.
Then you have to consider that 79 Topps sitting in packs that long "COULD" have snow on cards from sticking together.
Also consider the chances of pulling an o/c Gretzky. Chances are 50/50.
In my opinion anyone who pulls a PSA 8 or higher like Gretzky is going to be very lucky, and very happy.
Everyone is paid. Now becomes the fun part....RIPPING THEM!

Wouldn't it be funny if you pieced your 79 box together in bits, and your box ended up yielding about 5 or 6 Gretzky rookies.
Sorry, but I just find that too funny.
Not trying to start an arguement with you but other people wanted in the rip to open the packs. I had no interest in this rip but other people did.
Just saying,
Steve
I think many "rips", "box breaks" and the such have occured here with some people not ripping the packs. I'm sure
Jim has participated in other breaks where he and others either kept them closed, or submitted the packs to PSA for pack grading.
I'm not sticking up for Jim, or saying you're wrong. Just saying what I've experienced in the past.
Cheers, Steve
I was happy with the corners and centering. Not much wax on front of top card. I would say these are nice packs.
I did find some gradable cards. Remember that I'm paying $50-$200 for PSA 9's and 10's that I don't have.
Thanks to everyone who helped get this box sold out.

I still have the packs from the last Topps Hockey box that was done, along with 98% of packs from the few hundred I have bought from all the group box/case breaks.
Some people rip, some people don't, some sit on the sidelines. Either way there is no right, wrong, or have to's. If you want to buy some packs to rip let me know...

<< <i>Jim it's called a pack rip. If you had no intension of ripping then maybe you should have let somebody else get in instead. I know you paid just like everybody else but that's why it's called a pack rip.
Not trying to start an arguement with you but other people wanted in the rip to open the packs. I had no interest in this rip but other people did. >>
Keep in mind that some people, like me, have them sit on their shelf or desk with the intention of opening them but life happens and they get put in a closet. For instance, I had a box of unopened football and baseball from a group rip that I found while I was moving. I thought about keeping them sealed but I decided to grade them. They were all PSA 's 4's IMO and not worthy of staying sealed. haha. I busted them all one late night. 1974 to 1977 BB wax, 1981 Topps FB, 1984,etc.....Pulled nothing out of BB but got a Montana RC, Marino RC and Rice RC.
Lastly, there will be more rips in the future. I dont think Steve can keep up with demand here.
<< <i>I had no interest in this rip but other people did. >>
<< <i>I don't have a problem with it personally. Just that alot of people wanted in on this one who were going to rip the packs but sold out very quickly.
Cheers, Steve >>
So you have no interest in the rip, and you have no problem with it... but just felt a need to whine and complain?

Steve's had a tough week with extremely poor poppage at a very high cost. Let's cut him some slack here.

Steve's an awesome guy, I know. But anyone who likes ripping misses out sooner or later.
I'd like to mention is that sometimes I save packs for gifting later on. I don't feel any obligation to rip everything I buy. But I usually rip everything I keep.
I know it's going to be tough!
