Rare Johnson Matthey Bars ended last night

Have you all seen these auctions on the Johnson Matthey Pressed 1/2 Kilo bars?

The first went for $1225.00

Followed shortly by it's sibling for 1313.88!!

That's between 42-48 bucks over spot... on a 16 oz bar!!!

I have one in my collection, and it's a very sweet bar, but at that price I'm thinking I may soon part with it. image

It's all about what the people want...

I like unusual bars (odd weights, early poured bars, scarcer manufacturers, etc) but I hesitate to pay more than about a 20% premium over melt. When you offer these bars to most B&M coin shops you'll be lucky to get offered melt which means you'll have to sell them at auction which takes more time and hassle.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I prefer the poured bars and would not pay a huge premium for non-poured, odd-weight bars.

Nice but not my cup of bar.

Except for my stamped Engelhard 1/2 kilo I won't stretch to buy stamped bars - especially if we are not talking Engelhard.

I will stretch for rare poured if it is a type I need.

Hey morgantype, what the serial # on yours?

The guy in the auction said they only made 1200, but my serial is in the 2000's

  • Not too sure. I don't have it handy.

I think that's the definition of insanity. I pay what I feel are hefty premiums on the odd sized pour bars that I am addicted to, but that's just insane. It's not like it's a rare CC Morgan Dollar with proven mintage and a certified population. Ultimately, it's a .999 silver bar like Perry Hall said. Think about that when it comes time to sell it in a pinch to raise cash. All jmho.

Not necesssarily sure I agree with that assessment. If you take the average of the two auctions, you get $79/oz. Triple that figure and you get $247. Many, many people pay that much for a 3 oz Engelhard or JM bar.

I would argue that 3oz Engelhards and JMs are orders of magnitudes more common than these half kilos. And take a rare, low mintage/high grade CC dollar to your corner B&M and I'm not so sure you would get top dollar for them, either.

All the more reason to keep an emergency fund to handle those pinches, rather than needing to sell off something when the market may not be on your side.
