Re: What is the Best Way to Package Coins for CAC?

I have about 30 coins that I want to submit to CAC that I intend to mail by Registered Mail. What is the best way to package these? Do you send them in PCGS/NGC Boxes or do you use an alternative packaging method?

Thanks in advance for all responses.

If you are sending coins under $5k, go express mail. Otherwise registered. I don't think it matters how you pack them. I would just wrap them stacked in bubble wrap. They can rattle around in PCGS boxes. God forbid someone from the PO figure out what's inside.
All coins kept in bank vaults.

When they send them back they come "double box" style, with an inner box taped shut and peanutted to snugness inside a larger box, itself taped with brown fiber-reinforced paper tape. When I ship to them I tend to reuse their boxes after meticulously picking off the tape bits.

I pack the coins in the inner box so they don't rattle, at all. The invoice goes inside an envelope along with the coins inside the inner box. All this gets mailed registered, insured. I've had no troubles.

You can always put a few pieces of paper towel on top of the coins in a PCGS box to keep them from rattling.

Always insure for a bit more than they are worth and hope the PO looses them. You can always buy more coins.

I like to use the return shipping boxes from ATS. They have a standardized cardboard box with prefabricated card stock dividers, which eliminates any possibility of holder against holder rattling. A small panel of bubble packing under the box lid keeps all of the capsules from floating in their individual compartments also.

Package them carefully, just as you would if you were shipping them anywhere else. In my case, I wrap each coin up in bubble wrap and then do other things to secure the coins. This is done regardless of if the coins belong to me or if they belong to one of my clients and I am submitting for them.

Ship the 15 coins off to CAC in the plastic slab box. I use a thin piece of foam on top of the holders, then place the lid on. Tape the slab box lid on well. I place some packing inside the USPS Medium Flat Rate box, or even some empty boxes, just to fill up the space. Remember, weight is not considered in the Flat Rate boxes. Runs about $11 plus Registered, plus insurance.

I use the brown filament tape that needs to be whetted. I buy the tape at Staples in a really big roll for about $10. All the edges of the USPS box that meet, need to be taped. This means all the way around both ends, plus once around the middle. The rest of the box need not get taped. You can write on the box, and you can write on the tape. Forget the USPS stick on address label, not as safe. To begin with, I use small pieces of regular clear packaging tape to put the box together. All this regular packaging tape must be covered by the brown filament tape.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

It's a good practice to use a slab polish on them to remove any scraches on the slab that might interfere w/easy viewing.

The more pristine the slab the better you chance of a sticker.

Really pristine rattlers---I always put in one of those itty-bitty slab sized zip loc bags for protection. They always get returned to me in the same bags, so I think CAC appreciates the extra care you take to keep the plastic looking new.

Put them in red book order.
