Realone, I tend to agree that good coins sell themselves, and if a seller feels the need to talk up what he is trying to sell, then alarm bells should go off. I did not buy that coin because of Winter's description. I bought it because of the unusual, old-time toning and the history. Territorial coins should not be judged as one would judge typical U. S. mint products---they tend to be cruder in design (and the die maker's skill frequently leaves something to be desired). I will reserve additional comments until after I receive the coin.

I really like the funky letters and numerals. The patina looks amazing. the crudeness and the historic associations of this coin fascinate me. I'm glad that it has a home with someone who truly appreciates it.

    Realone,

Doug told me how astonishingly excellent the coin was BEFORE he bought it, encouraging me to buy it directly out of the auction.

Six people tried to buy the coin within an hour after he posted it. They are all wrong? You know nothing about these, as you indicate, so your opinion on the matter has little value, especially in light of your previous negative comments toward Doug.

<< <i>I saw the coin in person and agree that it's a great coin. It's also rock solid mint state. The only problem with the coin is a wave in the planchet, which I feared might turn the upgrading process into a bit of a nightmare. Otherwise, I would have bid higher. Most likely, others would have done so as well. >>

Is a wave in the planchet a nice way of saying slightly bent? Or do you mean
the thickness is uneven at certain points? Now that you mention it DW's pics sure
seem to have shading and light glare making it seem like something is going on. >>

These were struck under primative conditions on very thin planchets and wavey planchets are fairly common for this issue.

Doug told me how astonishingly excellent the coin was BEFORE he bought it.....

Me too - I think it's a really neat coin.

Doug suggested buying "The Bechtlers and Their Coinage" since I found the Bechtler coin issue sequence confusing.

It's a good read and worth having in one's library, if you can find it.

Part of the charm of the territorials is their crudeness - especially the Bechtlers, T. Reids and others. image

Even on your worse day, you are far from being an idiot RYK. Next time you won't hesitate or forget to buy that "special" coin when it becomes available. Call it tuition.image

RYK, don't feel bad. I happened to be looking at a Charles Steigerwalt price list from 1898, and saw this item under Pioneer Gold:

    "Bechtler Dollar. "27G 21C" Extremely fine. $2.50."

That's an attractive example of a coin I've not seen attractive before -- and you would never have guessed it from the auction photos.

Neat coin, and I'm glad to hear its found a good home.
