PSA holder question/help

I have a issue that I hope a more experienced collector can help me with. I bought a PSA 8 Ken Dryden RC a couple of years ago and I was looking at it last night and I noticed that the bottom left of the PSA holder was coming apart. After the initial panic of thinking the card had been switched or is fake. I did some research, compared it to other Dryden RC online and to my Lafleur RC, and to me the card seems real. So my theory is that the holder is just breaking down, is that possible? It is an older serial number and I am not sure how the card was handled/shipped before I got the card. I have attached some pics and would like some opinions on weather the card is real and if yes is it an PSA 8?

Thanks,

John

Card looks fine to me, but your scans (especially the back) are pretty small. I believe PSA will put it in a new holder for a nominal fee.

John just some technical issues. Is there any way you can make bigger scans? It's hard to really look at the problem you have, and a black background makes it easier to see. The card looks fine to me from what I can see too. Doug
  • Thanks for the quick reply here are some better pics.

  • Scans still are not that great. Need a black background. It is possible that card got switched. Again because your scans are not the best but by looking at the card it looks authentic but to me card looks like it has been trimmed. Why do i say this? This is OPC and i don't see the OPC rough cut on any of the edges from looking at your scans. Majority of the cards from this set will have the OPC rough cut at the top of card. About the only ones that don't have the OPC rough cut on top are the cards that were on the top of the uncut sheet and even those depending how dull the wire was got the OPC rough cut.
So i would check to see if the card has the OPC rough cut. If all the edges look like it was cut with a knife then somebody trimmed an oversized card and switched the cards.

  • Thanks for the reply Steve. There really isn't a rough cut, the bottom edge has some very minor "rough cut". I assume that if the card was trimmed it would be slightly smaller than other cards in that set? I say this because I have a PSA 8 Lafleur RC from the same set and size wise they are identical. However, the Lafleur does have a rough cut edge(s). Anyways I have attach the Dryden with a dark background. If anyone else has opinion please feel free to post.

  • Just because it's on size does not mean it hasn't been trimmed. Cards from this era are sometimes oversized and some undersize. The case does look frosted. If you try flexing the PSA case there should be very little play. By play i mean you should not be able to bend the holder. A sealed case cannot be bent much(elasticity wise). If it bends more then a normal then normal then chances are it has lost it's seal or in this case card might have been removed for a trimmed case.
In any case you should send to PSA to have it reholdered. If they find that the case was tampered you will be notified. Unfortunately this has happened to me and the card was sent back in a card saver 1.
So check the holder for elasticity first.
    Good Luck either way.

  • Thanks again Steve. The holder is definitely not as ridged as my other cards. I would like to think it is just an old holder. If the holder has been tampered do they automatically just send the card back in a card saver or do they still look at the card to see if it is legit?

  • They will reholder the card if the card is deemed original without being altered. If they find that card altered it will be sent back in a card saver 1. Everybody has dropped a case or two cracking or breaking the seal over the years. Or better yet when people don't ship properly either.
Best to send that card in to get reholdered. At least that way you will have peace of mind if they do reholder it. If they don't then you know what you have and hopefully you remember who you bought it off of just to stay clear of there cards.
