New Cherrypickers' Guide Mercury Dime Variety - 1940-S DDO & DDR

keyman64keyman64 Posts: 15,524 ✭✭✭✭✭
None have been graded at PCGS yet. I understand one has been shipped off to them though...an AU example if I am not mistaken. Here is mine. It was in an ANACS MS66 Holder but it is now raw. It has dark splotchy toning but overall the coin is very nice. Photographing coins is hard for me already but this splotchy look made it even more difficult. In hand the coin seems mostly white but when you tilt it you see the splotches. Odd...but it is not the first time I have seen this. I had a tough time getting a good shot of the doubling in the date but it is seen in all of the numbers. This coin can be easily Cherrypicked by looking for all of the DIE CRACKS. One from the rim at 6:30 and goes up through the neck. On the reverse there is one that goes through the first "A" in AMERICA and then into the field. If anyone can find a nicer example, hopefully with Full Bands, I would be very interested. image

OBVERSE: DDO-002/WDDO-002, Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling.
The "1" is split. The entire bottom portion of the "9" is split. In hand you can see the doubling in the circle of the "9" as well. The "4" has minor splits. The "0" is cool in hand, you can really see it nice on the inside of the "0". Doubling can be seen on the designer's initials and motto as well. I did not photograph those parts because it is just really hard to see.
Die Marker: Obvious DIE CRACK from 6:30 at RIM all the way through the neck of Liberty.

REVERSE: DDR-001/WDDR-001, Class II Distorted Hub Doubling.
Doubling can be seen on STATES OF, easiest on ES. Top of fasces, axe, leaves and top right branches.
Die Marker: Obvious from the rim through the first A of AMERICA into the field. There are other small die cracks as well, including one at the bottom to the left of the fasces and to the right of the branch (trust me, I would have to point it out to you). Light strike doubling can be seen on many of the leaves in the middle of the right side.

Comments: Many of the Class II doubled die reverses in the Mercury Dime Series show the doubling on the top of the coin, not the bottom. It is not known why this happens.

Source: A good bit was me but I copied word for word a lot from the Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes book by John A. Wexler and Kevin Flynn.

    Nice Merc!

Are there any Mercury Dime variety websites? I'm sure you could build a nice one with all the varieties you have for this series!

At some point I will get good photos taken of all of mine for a nice write up about each in the series...at some point.

No die crack would indicate what? Early die state?

I dont have it handy to look at it right now.

Truthfully, I am not sure. The CPG and the Treasure Hunting book BOTH talk about the die markers of the die cracks to identify the coin...read above in my OP. Yes, my guess would be early die state but I'm not sure.

Wrong. The later state of both have die cracks, and if no die cracks are present that just means the coin was struck before the die cracked.

    according to CONECA:
The FS-10-1940S-901 that they have listed is stage C Late Die State.

EDS and MDS are listed as unconfirmed....none submitted to CONECA.

I will send it to Wiles and see what he lists it as.

I only see one DDO/DDR combo for 1940-S listed by CONECA.

According to Wexler's and Flynn's Treause Hunting Mercury Dimes there are more than one DDO/DDR combination.

    WDDO-002 / WDDR-001

    WDDO-003 / WDDR-002

    WDDO-006 / WDDR-003

Which do you have? Which did they choose for the CPG?

See my OP ...it is the first one you listed.

Yup early die state no cracks, late die state has cracks. As of today I have an example of BOTH! Cherrypicked one at a show this morning. It is in the slider range. I'll write up a show report later with photos hopefully and share what ELSE I was able to Cherrypick. image
