Tough Mercury Dime Variety to Find...1939-D/D FS-501

Here is another tough Mercury Dime Variety to locate. Currently there are only 3 graded at PCGS (AU55, MS63, MS65FB). This is tied with the population of the 1941 DDO but considering the 1941 DDO is a tougher variety to identify I would still call it the toughest Merc Variety. This one might be tied with the 1945-D/D FS-501 and the 1935-S/S FS-501...something like that. Below is my example that has not yet made it's journey to PCGS. It is now raw but was in a 64FB SEGS holder. I could see PCGS putting this in either a 63, 64, 63FB or 64FB holder. The bands are split all the way across but there is a hit on the center bands so I am not sure how they will judge that. In any case, this is a rare coin to find and think this to be a very lusterous and pleasing example. If you happen to locate a better example, I would be very interested. Thanks! image

Nice coin. Usually a bridge (hit) across the bands will kill the FB status, but you never know. As far as grade...looks like 63 to me, but such a big pic could be misleading there also. I found this variety years ago (80's) on teletrade.

With this variety being so easy to identify, I am surprised there aren't more certified. I guess it speaks to the rarity. When I first started the variety set I thought this one would be one of the first ones I would find/cherrypick. It took me 1.5 years to find this one! Wowzers. The 1939-D comes very nice quite frequently and am surprised there are not 67FB and maybe a 68FB examples out there. Who knows, maybe I will find one some day. image

<< <i>Again these are the varieties that I like, I can really sink my eyes into these!!! >>

You are not alone! I appreciate the ones that are EASY to see and cherrypick. The others just give me a headache looking for them...squinting through a 20x loupe under poor lighting conditions at shows for hours at a time. Ugh! image
