Remind me on the difference between red flip/blue flip....

Red Flip: Grade the card, authenticate (only) the auto
Blue Flip: Authentic and grade the auto only

    Is that right?
    My LSU Autographs

Only an idiot would have a message board signature.

Red flip has to authenticate card in order to grade, but essentially correct

Just to be clear, and to see if my understanding is right...

Red Flip: Authenticate the auto & grade the card (and it must be a card that PSA would grade)
Blue Flip: Authenticate the auto & optionally, grade the auto only (and can be any medium that can be slabbed, IE. index card, slip of paper, etc.)

you are correct... basically no cut or home-made cards. Red flips are nice also if you have multi-signed cards you only have to pay 1 fee - with the blue you have to pay for each signature.

Of course... PSA will actually be at a local show here for the first time in a long time (ever?) this weekend... and my stack of 58 cards next up for subbing is way short of a 100 min sub!!! I knew I should have just held off an not submitted that 30 card sub on the 25-card min. February special last week!!! I could easly come up with another 12 cards... but 42, ain't gonna happen image

Looks like I'll be sending in 3 subs. ...hoping sports/non-sports doesn't matter.
  • Brutal that the new special price for red flip autos is $15. I could see going up to like $12, but a 50% increase? Especially when you're talking about cards valued under $100..
  • The grade on a red flip can be affected by the quality (or lack of quality) of the autograph. A card in perfect condition that would grade out a 10 if unsigned with a smudged autograph is not going to get a 10.
  • Plus, they still have this one:>

    Sports & Non-Sports - $10 Per Card - 10 Card Minimum Quantity Required - 10 Business Days (approx.)
For Cards Valued Under $250 Each
    For Gold & Platinum Members
Turnaround Time Varies with Demand (approx 10 business days)

I do not believe your accurate. The auto/ or whether its smudged or not does not affect the the grade of the card.

Ya, I've had some ugly autos on nice cards and nice autos on ugly cards and they often grade near what I think they would grade with or without the auto...

Rumor has it, that will not be happening..sounds like this is the new red flip special. I could be wrong though and I hope am. Maybe since this special allows cards valued up to $500, they will potentially do a $10-12 special on cards valued under $100 or $250..we can hope

Or are you saying a bulk rate not a special?...either way I agree!

Maybe what I was told only applies to signed tickets in a red flip and not cards.

This David Cone ticket would easily pull a 9 if it wasn't signed 100 times out of 100 submissions, and would be a 10 most of the time as well, except there's a very light smudge on the Yogi Berra signature. I originally submitted it asking for a minimum grade of 8, or else slab it authentic. When it was being processed, I changed my mind and decided I wanted a number grade regardless. It had actually popped as authentic, but I called immediately and asked to have a number grade assigned. When it came back a 7, I was told they examined it very closely to see if they could make it an 8, since that was originally my minimum requested grade. In the same breath and for the same reason, I was also told I shouldn't bother resubmitting it for review, because it will never be higher than 7 under the current system. If they ever start doing half points for tickets, I'm confident it will get a bump, but only to 7.5.

I also vaguely remember reading somewhere on the psa website (or maybe being told by customer service) that signed items receiving a number grade will have the grades blended, as with my Cone ticket. This is not the case with signed baseballs, since the autograph and the ball are assigned separate, independent grades. It's also not the case with signed photos or cuts, since on those items, only the autograph is graded, not the item.

Not that it's relevant to this discussion, I also remember reading that on graded baseballs, the grader has discretion to increase or decrease the overall grade by half a point, for items that have unique conditions or circumstances.
