Copper/Flying eagle cents experts

MilkmanDanMilkmanDan Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was just going through some coins from a small cent type set I built last year and noticed something cool on my '57 flying eagle.

I had somehow missed this previously, but the date and UNITED both show some nice doubling.

It looks like the first S and E in STATES also shows some doubling, as well as the eagle's beak.

A few questions....
Is this a DDO, or just machine doubling? I checked the coinfacts page and it doesn't match the only DDO listed there. My CPG doesn't cover cents so I'm turning to the forum experts. Curious to hear what you all think of this one. Thanks!

I'll add that it sure looks like a true doubled die to me.

Edit: I may have been a little excited and quick to post. Looks less like true doubled die around the tops of the letters in UNITED.

Most of it looks like mechanical doubling to me, although the more subtle doubling on the 'stem' areas on the T and D of UNITED bear some resemblance to die doubling.
I agree with Ankur though - nice images!

As interesting as it looks, I think it's just machine doubling.

I think it's shelf or longacre doubling.

Thanks guys. There are aspects of the pictures that bug me, but I have Mark's book and am working on improvement. I took these pics with a desk lamp at work image

Sorry Dan, Shelf doubling. If you wanted a DDO 57 all you had to do is ask. If it looks like a smear with no split in the lettering than it isn't a true Doubled die

Hah, no actually I was taking photos in preparation to move some coins to the BST. I just think it's cool when something like this sneaks under my nose. I've trained myself to be ultra-sensitive to doubling on a *ahem* particular series, and this isn't it!

Ok thanks for looking everyone, shelf doubling it is (according to the peanut gallery, are you guys small cent experts huh?). I expect Rick will say the same. Cool nonetheless.

The tops of the letters in UNITED totally do, but the 8 in the date doesn't at all, to my eyes.

    What's cool is the grade!!

Doubling is nice, but that's one nice FE cent.

    Beautiful FE. Love it.

I don't think it's Longacre. Looks like machine doubling to me.

When is it going on BST?
