White whale closing in 15 minutes....! edit: GOT IT!

THAR SHE BLOWS!!

I figured I'd jinx myself right now by posting this. image

Well, I've been anticipating the ending of this auction all week.
I missed out on a copy of this particular card in a PSA 7 holder
years ago and it has stung ever since. A beautiful copy in a lower
grade is ending shortly, the snipe is set, and the tension is mounting!!!
I might have to snipe manually just in case gavelsnipe fails me.

The questions are a) will I win? and B) how much will I have to pay? LOL

Wish me luck! (and please don't "out" the auction with a guess.

I will update when it's over..... with a scan either way, win or lose.

Good luck!!! I know how you feel. Been in this situation many times. It's weird how I can actually get an adrenaline rush sitting in front of the computer.

I had a snipe not activate Sunday and it cost me $100. Better throw in a manual bid for safety.

Yeah, typically I'd be out working or playing cards, so I wouldn't
have this issue of sitting in front of the computer with anticipation. image

The card isn't extremely rare, but it doesn't come up in nice shape
    very often at all.

    Thanks, guys!

    YES!!!

Wow, not sure what the hell happened, but this went for way cheaper
than I expected! I could not be happier, as my snipe was set much higher.
This was almost too easy! image

Patience pays off, too, as the previous PSA 7 I missed
out on sold for well over $4K (not exactly my comfort zone image ).

Original Auction -- 1954 Dan Dee Mickey Mantle PSA 5

Some toning overall, but you can't ask for more on a PSA 5.
No stains. Pretty cool to think this card came out of a bag
of potato chips. White whale -- HARPOONED! (now what?)

  • That is AWESOME!

must be a wrinkle there that takes NOTHING away from the eye appeal of the card.

theres no comparison between your 5 and the one on ebay for 1650, yours is a great looking 5.

    other 5 for comparison
  • CWCW Posts: 1,221 ✭✭✭
Thanks! According to the seller, no wrinkles. I'll be checking when
it arrives but the seller is pretty good about disclosing surface flaws.
The card does have some damage to the upper left corner. I'm still
amazed the last second bidding wasn't more active on this one.

For the record, this is the PSA 7 I was outbid on back in '08. This
was definitely high end for a NM graded card. Card was so nice,
I saved the scan despite losing the auction...

WOW ... as a HUGE Mantle fan, I say CONGRATS! To pay only $200.00 - $300.00 more than the average "5" has gone for is NOTHING, when you look at the condition of that card. It is an AMAZING card for the grade and presents very well. Is that a slight indentation on the top right border? If so, probably the reason for the grade. I'll take "5s" that look like that all day long. ENJOY ... man, I LOVE this card!

Not sure if that's a slight indentation, Doug, or maybe looks like that
due to the small perforations found on the edges of Dan Dee cards.

That's another thing that's cool about Dan Dee's... the perforations. image
  • Nice card.
