Does declared value have an effect on the grade thats PSA assigns?

Hi,

Example - I have a card that has a great shot at a 9 - its worth 750 in PSA 8 and 1000.00 in PSA 9 - If submit this card in a monthly special for cards under 500, and declare a value of $499, do I diminish my shot at the higher grade?

Does PSA look at my declared value and say " well, the submitter declared the values as x, so he must think its an 8 and not a 9 and assigns a grade that comes closest to that declared value" ???

Or is declared value used strictly for insurance priposes only?

  • nope... just for insurance purposes... you can always call after the grades post to ask for more insurance on the return trip home.

This is kinda OT sorta, and I'm sorry to change the topic, but, I have always wondered if the graders are tougher or stingy when it comes to grading big money cards, like the 52 Mantle or the like, as opposed to a joe shmoe common that gets subbed. Has anyone been reluctant to submit a card fearing it will not grade as high as it should simply because of the significance of the card to the hobby? Or do you think it is equal across the board?

Think of how many different cards a grader will see in a day. Now how many of those will he know what VCP (or eBay sales history) says about the card without looking it up? And for the ones he doesn't, do you think that anyone at PSA is going to spend the time looking those up?

    Employee time is costly.

The graders are professionals. This is what they do for a living. I doubt they would be swayed by what the submitter thought the grades should be. As far as being harder on "High Dollar Cards" I have a few I feel are undergraded and I felt they were generous with my Koufax rookie and 52 Pafko. I would imagine they give those cards a little more scrutiny.

I believe Joe O. has already stated on the board that a group of graders instead of just the normal one will collaborate to assess the grade for a truly high dollar card.

yep I remember seeing the same post... didn't it also say the graders don't know the value the sub'er assigned to the card.
