Very Rare Gold Dollar: 1855-D G$1 ANACS 40 Details cleaned

This is the rarest gold dollar other than the 1849-C Open Wreath. The 1861-D is more expensive but according to Bowers there are less available 55-D's. With a mintage of 1,811 and an estimated 75 to 90 surviving in all grades this is a tough coin to find in any condition. This coin has been designated as "Altered Surfaces" by ANACS and is housed in a older, small, white slab. The reverse has numerous hairlines and shows evidence of an old cleaning. The obverse has a few light hairlines but actually looks quite nice with normal wear. Both sides have toned to a pretty normal gold color and are not polished or bright looking.
This coin was purchased from Heritage in 7/2006 for $6,325. Problem free coins of this grade sell for $17k to $20k and ones with damage from use in jewelry sell for $4k to 7k. An EF 45 example just sold for $20k+ in the latest Stacks auction. I will sell this coin for $5995.
