A submission question.

Hopefully it isn't dismissed and will be answered honestly, so here goes.........................When you submit coins for grading do you sometimes fall into the trap of "hoping" for a grade with the resulting dissappointment as opposed to be overly critical and sending in coins which return with the grade you assumed they'd receive?? Thanks in advance.

Of course, it's called "being optimistic" image

Because I usually grade my raw coins 1/2 to 1 full grade down,
I'm usually quite happy with how those coins grade at PCGS image

for me, if the added value of the grade is substantial and i feel there is some hope, i will go with hope.

    Morning Al.

I always hope for the grade that agrees with mine. If I feel like the grade given is too low, I think the service is just being tough. If I think the grade given is too high, I think the process is flawed and the services can't be trusted.

I always have a grade in mind when sending the coins in. When they come back short or BB'ed I am at first disappointed. But after carefully studying the coin I "usually" see why they (PCGS) did what they did. Only once have I sent a dime back in that BB'ed. And it came back AU53 like I thought it should have in the first place.

But after carefully studying the coin

this is a very astute reply which is in-line with my thinking. while i admittedly haven't had a coin graded in about two years i tend to be very, very critical of what i submit and as a result tend to be a little upset when things come in low. as you say, though, PCGS has taken me "to school" and it's made my grading acumen better. i also tend to avoid certain series/issues because i just can't seem to grade them. image

I fit in to this way of thinking, its been years as well for me since a submission and I too was
very critical with what I sent in, I was overjoyed with some as well as disapointed with some.
I overall recieved the designations I wanted but I cast aside alot that would not meet that
criteria and have been thinking about reviewing those that were cast into that someday box
again, BUT I know I'll be more critical than hopeful and truthfully there will be hope in the back
of my mind, as for grading, seems everytime I think I can grade, reality says guess again.
