Will it cross at PCGS??

anablepanablep Posts: 5,159 ✭✭✭✭✭
Sending this Morgan in to PCGS through my local coin dealer.

Will PCGS holder it?

Thanks for looking...

The mark on the face is not a scratch, but a toning break probably caused by a fiber.

I don't think we can accurately tell from that image.

But I'd say there's a decent chance...no major marks that I can see!

    50/50 chance

That toning could not play well with PCGS as of their recent strictness on Morgans IMO

Edited to add: Gradewise it should

This IMHO...although it may very well be that the toning was imparted by that old ANACS holder.

Nice coin, but that toning looks a little strange.

  • Who knows what the heck they will do but its natural toning and a very nice coin. Why not leave it as is? PCGS is not the be all and end all of "grading" you know. I hate to see people constantly pumpiong money into their coins.

    No way.

  • That is some really weird, almost reverse looking toning. It's not semi-PL with that die polish?

Agree. Unless you need it for a registry set, I'd leave it in the old small sized ANACS slab. To answer your question, it looks like it should cross but that is based on your less than optimal pics. Let us know what you decide and, if you send it in, let us know how they grade it.

    Hi Perry,

That is what I was thinking - old small ANA toning on PL surfaces but is it PL? This still is a little outside my box in terms of appearance. If good, grade might be nice.

I would leave this one in the ANACs holder for a number of reasons

    1. I would be interested to see an earlier picture of the coin at the time it was graded- why? Because I suspect part of the toning transpired in the holder

    2. I still see some numismatic history not just in the coin, but the holder it is in

    3. Crossing a coin like this just begs for questions that are better off left unanswered

    4. I am sure I am in the minority on this point, but there is a coolness factor with the holder and overall look- this was graded very early- likely the late 1980s- and it just may be alittle on the conservative side for a CC and the crack out/upgrade crowd could bid this one up- for a CC it is very clean

I like the coin and see it as a minimum 65 all day long and in the event you see it that way, your view is what matters

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

I'm gonna say yes they will and guess a grade of 64+ assuming that you didn't specify a minimum.

    Why? Color/toning? The holder?

    Solid Strike.
    Toning looks 100% Natural
No major hits and/or scuff marks.

I would say that there is a STRONG chance that this coin will cross into a PCGS MS65 holder.

    Hi.

    Its not a PL coin.

It will be crossed only if PCGS agrees with the 65 grade, as that is the specified minimum I want for the coin.

So really, no harm sending it in on my end (its on its way already).

I agree its a great old holder and I have many Morgans holdered in these ANCS slabs, but I feel its time to move the better pieces of my collection into PCGS plastic if I want to protect the value of my coins.

    Thanks.

I would definitely need to see this in person to be able to tell. But as far as I can see, I wouldn't rule it out.

  • anablepanablep Posts: 5,159 ✭✭✭✭✭
It won't come back genuine because it must grade a 65 or it will come back in the original holder.

Lots of debate here, can't wait to see the results...

I do not recall ever seeing a Morgan with toning like that in a PCGS holder, and I suspect that PCGS would want to keep it that way.

Sounds like you'll be getting the coin back as sent then.

FWIW based on the pics, I think the toning is probably fine/market acceptable. I just don't think it makes the MS65 cut.

I think that it's just the pic lighting that's inducing all of these negative comments. That toning happened "naturally" in the old ANACS slab. I assume it doesn't look washed out in-hand...again, it's the lighting. It'll cross......just not maybe at 65.
  • lasvegasteddylasvegasteddy Posts: 10,419 ✭✭✭
a small anacs crossed at any grade...from what i recall here has very-very high sucess rates
pcgs has respect for anacs small holders...unless i'm wrong..."again"

  • I've collected a lot of coins over the years, and now that I'm semi-retired I've finally begun to spend some time learning about something that has brought me so much pleasure, but I haven't started grading and crossing all my old coins until recently, so please forgive my ignorance. Am I understanding that PCGS will inspect and grade the coin without removing it from the current ANACS holder?

    Sorry!
    Trime
  • With the caveat that it's hard to grade from a photograph, I'm predicting that it will cross at grade. The cheek is very clean for a 65. It is also well known that those old, small ANACS holders will impart target toning on silver coins. It's been in that holder, undisturbed, for a long time. I think the grading on those old ANACS holders is generally very conservative.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Leave that Morgan entombed in the original holder, don't even think of cracking that puppy out of there, nostalgia makes this one a keeper!

I don't think it will cross as MS 65. It's a LQQKER in my eyes, nevertheless. If it does cross, well and good. That's the decision of the guys who have the privilege, honor and duty to grade your coin.

edit, for spelling. What's new ?

Questionable Color? What's going on on the obverse under her chin? Less than 50% chance IMHO. Leave her alone.
