I thought I remember seeing a sale advertised in the SMR for a PSA 5 for like $11,000 or so.

Why are these so rare? Production, condition, both or some other factors?

  • add to it that PWCC is selling it ... oh my

    $20G+?

  • I know literally nothing about this issue, but it sure does look like it should be graded higher than a 4.

Are you going after it Bobby?

IMO nowhere near $20k -- that's PSA 8/9 money. This card is actually somewhat easier to find in high grade - but by no means easy -- half the PSA-graded cards are 8 or higher.

I expect it will go for $4k-$5k -- I was hoping to get it for around $2k but the seller is too well known / respected. Maybe at this year's National.

I remember reading about this issue and the propensity of the 3-d plastic coating to crack and thus downgrading the card.

I agree with Scott. There are only 47 of these in PSA slabs, but most are in high grade. 40 of the 47 are graded higher than this one and only 3 graded lower. Taking into account a premium because of the seller, I say it goes for around $5,000.00.

Thanks for posting that link. I saw that advertised in this months SMR and that explains why it is so sought after.

A SGC 84 example sold in the Dec. 2011 Huggins & Scott Auction for $10,575.00.

That card was a great example.

If this card goes over $4k the buyer overpaid imo.

Nice card for the grade, good luck if you're trying to get it.

The "base" set consists of 12 cards. It was a limited Topps test issue that may never have actually been sold at retail. In recent years 3 proof cards have also surfaced ( Monday, T Davis and ODonoghue). And a Brooks Robinson 3D card, thought to be a prototype also exists. There is a wrapper currently on ebay and at least one display box also exists. Topps mimicked these #D card in a 2011 issue

Keith Olberman wrote an article you can find on line discussing the set and it's many front and back "variations".

I was the under bidder on this, can't believe I lost it. Almost made me want to quit and sell off my whole clemente collection.
