    I remember it well having followed the "We are Family" Bucs back then. He handed them out whenever a teammate did something to help the team win. They then got sewn onto the caps of the recipients resulting in players having various numbers of stars on their cap based on their achievements that season. He was called 'Pops' and was the leader of the team having come back from a sub-par 1977 season to have a successful 1978 season and then ultimately an MVP season in 1979.

    Here's the 1979 Pirates team photo. All the stars on the players' caps are "Stargell Stars".

    Im sitting here having a few beers and it just poped in my head. I dated a girl in California who was a relation of a ball player named Joe Oeschger. I remember hearing a story about a Stargell star. Mind you this was like 1993 so I dont recall alot about it.
