NGC star designation question on PF70

I am a little confused, which is normal for me, but the NGS web indicates 70 coins are not given a star grade as they are the best already as stated on their web site "As they are already of the ultimate grade, any coin graded MS 70 or PF 70 will not be eligible for the *"

Looking at the heritage auctions for tonight I ran across this PF70 with a star.

What am I missing here?

they learned a lesson and changed policy i'd bet as they may of caught some bashing about how something can be given a 70+

When NGC uses the star designation on proofs, it's almost always in relation to the cameo effect. So when you have a coin that is cameo on one side and not on the other, they'll just use the star. If it's ultra cameo on one side, but just cameo on the other, they'll call it cameo star. I don't see why using the designation in this way is inconsistent or wrong. Clearly a 70 Ultra Cameo is better than a 70 Cameo Star.

Now if they used the star to mean superior eye appeal like they do with toners, then I could see how a 70 star would be seen as better than a regular 70 and how that wouldn't make sense since a 70 is perfection.

The real problem seems to be that NGC uses the star to mean different things and that creates confusion.

  • Thanks illini420, now I noted it was cameo and not ultra

Probably cause the reverse is holding the coin from going ultra cameo, so NGC compensated the owner with a star in lieu of the ultra cameo designation.

It makes sense to give some sort of recognition to exceptional cameo on some of these more difficult moderns. PCGS should do it too. --Jerry

yeah, it got a star because it's only a Cameo.
  • Shouldn't a perfect coin have a star implied?

I'm glad I only lost 2 minutes of my life on this one. image

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
