I was quite happy and a little surprised with how I made out. All my friends lost almost all the money they put into their collections and even their circulation finds were no help. I made about an $8 profit on my complete buffalo nickel collection. It was low grade and the better coins were acquired mail order for the main part. One coin saved the whole collection. I think it was Jack Beymer who had sent me a really nice technically VF '13-D type II that could almost pass as an XF when I ordered a F. Otherwise I'd have lost a little on the collection.

I have watched for many years your posts, comments etc. I have a lot of respect for you and have learned alot from you-
I started my collecting many years ago when my grandfather sat me down with some stuff he called junk, and a few catalogs from auctions. That was the begining-some various copper along with other odds and ends. It all ended up somewhere, as lord knows where it is now-second attempt was I was in my late teens and someone came forward with a bunch of assorted date morgans-I did not have the money at the time, so my boss bought them for me and got his money back thru payroll deductions-no biggie cept I still had not grasped collecting and broke out the silver polish
next trip not to long after that was a few eBay aquisitions that were just that, stuff bought-nothing special top dollar paid for garbage.
Late 80's early 90's I woke up-got a blue and red book, started hitting shows and major auctions, made friends with tons of collectors and dealers (most reside right here) and went from there.
K- now my ugly story is out I will look, take pics and post his wares somewhere for a nominal price-stuff I cannot replace Ill hold back. Once his little trip commences I want to make sure he has proper equipment, as yes I took one board memebers advise and looked at a few mountain biking videos on you tube. And yes, I want him back in one peice
Kids who were meant to collect coins will find their way back some time in the future. Wanting to focus on other things at 16 is evidence that you raised a normal teen.

I received a phone call this afternoon, short and sweet:
Yeah?
Oh hey sorry to bother you, just wanted to check if you made a decision on the coins. Not for nothing but I think I would rather hold them if its ok with you. Robs father said if we clean out the garage and a few other things he will see we have everything we need for our trip. I put a lot of time into my collection and you spent a lot of time helping, does not seem right to get rid of them for a trip, is that ok with you?
sure, you need anything else?
no.
K have fun, seeya soon.
Not sure what happened, but I am way thankful, think I am going to slip a few new coins into the boxes before they go back to him.
Now I can get. back to my junkbox revealed project, forever thankful a bullet was dodged. thanks for everyones help anyway
I would let your son do the leg work finding out how big a money hit he is going to take and then after he finds out his stuff is worth x, hand the cash over and put the books away. If he is going to let 500 bucks worth of coins go for 200 you might as well get the reward as opposed to a dealer/stranger. I made up the numbers as a comparison.
I never spent much time with my son on coins, he likes guns. He likes to buy the 300 ultra mags, 378 weatherbys, 375 H&H's while they are not my favorite caliber he thinks he needs them. One of these days he is going to see the wisdom of cheaper calibers with less kick but you got to let them figure it out on there own. I just try to minimize the loss as best i can. He had a gun he had about 1600 in and could only get 1000 out of it so i just bought it.
My parents were always to busy to deal with us kids so i do what ever possible to spend time doing what he likes more so than what i would perfer him to do. 4 rounds thru his 30-378 is about 3 &3/4 to many for me. I perfer a .308 AR
He is 19 now so maybe when he is mid 20's with more income coins will come

I think you should let your son read this thread. From a females point of view, I think he would be forever touched to know how much your time together means to you. It's far more than just coins.... So glad it worked out as well as it did.
