Maybe they were thinking a PSA 8.75. If you take the SMR of the 8.5 and the 9 it comes to $5,825.

Sweet looking card for sure both condition wise and design!

  • To me, that '54 Topps Howe is the best looking hockey card ever made.
That was a nice buy on that SGC example.

WOW! 3.5 years ago that card in the same grade (I don't know the POP report so I don't know if there is more than 1) sold for $13,200.00 in a Mastro Auction.

I figured I would put it out there and let someone else run with it.

    my t-205's

looking for low grade t205's psa 1-2
  • I think the price is fair. Perhaps a little too high.
I love the 1954 Topps set, but I've always felt that the price for Gordie Howe cards have been a little too high.
Orr, Gretzky, and Lemieux are the top three, and everyone else is a distant second IMO.

Different brand of hockey. League is different also.

Howe is near the top as one of the greatest ever played.

Who ever bought this card got a steal. I'm not an active collector any more, but at that price, I would jumped on it if I knew about it.

Bottom line, you can say how nice a card looks, how much it sold for in the past, yadda yadda, but IMHO the SGC slab HURT the price of that card. SGC cards DO NOT get the high prices PSA gets, period. I had a card that sells for $1,500 plus in a PSA slab. My card was a 1 of 1, SGC equivalent. Mine sold for $500. That should speak volumes.

Look at Gretzky and Lemieux's PPG compared to their contemporaries. It's not even close.

Look at Howe's PPG compared to his contemporaries. He isn't ahead of Beliveau, Hull, or Mikita.

Again, Gretzky, Lemieux and Orr were the greatest who ever played, and Gordie was a great player, but not in their league.

And yes, most hockey collectors prefer PSA over SGC.

I'm not a hockey fan, but looking at the chart you linked, I'm curious: why don't you include Bossy along with those three?

Bobby is right. I have seen too many trimmed cards in SGC holders, not the BGS cut from sheet, but trimmed. The seller could have paid the crossover fees and made at least $1000 more.

The card has a 0% chance of crossing in that holder. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Card would have to be cracked out to have a chance. Card may have already made a few trips to Cali. Using the crossover service for high grade star cards is a losing proposition.

I agree. That is why it still resides in a SGC holder.

+2 It's in a SGC slab instead of a PSA slab for a reason.

Gretzky and Lemieux's numbers overmatch Bossy's numbers (all three forwards).

Bobby Orr was a defenceman, and the guy who is a distant second to him (Paul Coffey) had the luxury of playing with Gretzky, Messier, and Kurri.

Defenceman don't have as many scoring opportunities as forwards.

Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr created scoring opportunities out of thin air. No one else in the history of the game could do what they did.

Come on. Gretzky and Lemieux played in the freewheeling '80s. Howe played in another era. Not everything can be based on stats alone.

You guys may have a point about it being in an SGC slab vs PSA. A PSA 9 would bring at least $10,000.

  • << <i>Come on. Gretzky and Lemieux played in the freewheeling '80s. Howe played in another era.. >>

Howe played in another era, but his Points Per Game in that era are not better then Beliveau, Bobby Hull, or Stan Makita.

Gretzky and Lemieux are way above the others in their era.

And Bobby Orr's numbers are just sick for a defenceman.

Gordie Howe was a Teemu Selanne or Steve Stamkos with elbows.

Have to remember that the 80's were the scoring era. Their will never be a player with those ppg again with the way of the game.
