This A&R is an AU58... Can you tell me why?

Ownership seems to be blinding me... It looks MS to me. I just reshot it tonight as I've been messing around with the camera settings/lighting. When I looked at the big pics of this one it struck me that I really don't see a rub... Help me learn if you would be kind enough. It's in an old small ANA slab.

It looks MS to me as well, from your pics, but I am sure someone will be along soon to tell you there is a luster break somewhere or they see rub on the eagle or rub on her knee.....

Could all the hairlines in the right obverse field play a part?

That could be it. I was looking more for a rub somewhere and hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

Because it has been circulated and you can see that on the knee, shoulder and arm on the front.

    Eagles head on the back.

    Nice pretty coin!

I don't know. Like I said in my 1st post, I expected someone to mention those, but I haven't seen the coin in hand but the OP has. It could be friction rub that is being noticed and the coin could have all the luster there. In that case, to me (though, admittedly, not to everyone), it shouldn't be "circ graded" if that is the only gotcha on it.

As the gentleman collector of yesteryear would call it,

    "Cabinet friction"
  • I think the lines in the fields, maybe one to many baths over the years also. Nice coin and could probably get into a low unc holder at some time.

Looks like it was rubbed with a weed-wacker!
Me thinks AU58 is generous. besides an au58
is always better than a ms61. image

THIS is the reason not because it has hairlines. I've seen many MS coins with hairlines...countless in fact.

I see this MS61 thing in NGC especially. I just about cringe when a coin catches my eye, and then I notice its in an NGC ms61. It seems
to be the, well were not sure on this one because of this or that, soooo.... lets designate it ms61. Cured-Good to go. I'm sure its not always so, but I sure run across
more than not, it seems. I've learned to take an extremely hard look at them and if at all not sure, Pass.

Agree---friction in the fields shows the coin experienced light circulation. Very nice looking coin!

I remember that coin, I was the underbidder. All the comments made above are valid. It's still a great au 58. Have you ever tried to cross it, just to see what would happen?

I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback. The coin is still in the holder I bought it in (seen below) and I don't have any intentions of trying to cross it into something else. I also don't have any intentions of trying to sell it any time soon. At the end of the day, it is what it is and I appeciate it just the way it is. I was just curious as to what others thought/see as I don't see luster breaks in hand.
    Thanks again all.

Let's not forget that most pre-1857 seated coinage in MS61-62 also has rub on the highpoints and probably some field friction as well.
There are 63's and 64's in holders with heavy field rub. I've seen plenty of them.

I don't see anything that I would call "market" rub. The coin is comparable in luster and friction to what I've seen in 61 holders. This date
gets to be a lot tougher and priced much higher from AU to Mint State. That could be why it's netted out as a 58. Then again, I wouldn't
necessarily believe the ANACS assigned grade. I tend to think that ANACS grades a coin like this just based on what they see, and less on
market value as PCGS and NGC do. In the current holder it might as well be raw. But it's at least a 58. The deep peripheral toning no doubt
mutes the luster. But if you can see something in those areas, as well as luster in the field centers, it should be a 61 imo. If there's rub on the
wing tips, knuckles, knees, etc it's more an absence of color than it is actually wear. If ANACS had some concerns about how that color came to
be that might be another reason to net it down to 58.
