Finding Rare Cards at National

I am set on making my first trip to the National convention this year.

Was just curious to know what to expect. I will be going with the sole purposes of searching for, and buying some of the rarer cards that I need for my Jackie Robinson master set (specifically the tougher Bond Bread issues, Hocus Focus cards, and maybe a '54 Grey Back). Most of these cards have a total pop of 15 on the combined PSA and SGC pop reports.

My expectations are that I will at least be able to find 1-2 of these cards. Am I setting myself up for disappointment? I'm not overly concerned with pricing, but more with actually tracking down some of these issues. I figure auction houses and the National are my best bet.

  • its hard to say, you just never know....biggest challenge will be staying focused to go thru all the tables...
the first 200 tables could have nothing for you , and then ....all of sudden...YES !!

National is a bit over rated IMO, seems like there is an endless supply of game used type stuff and other memorabilia. But it seems like you have a goal in mind so it might work out for you. Good Luck in your hunt!

I'd be curious to ask autograph collectors the same question. For example, is the National the one place I might ever find a signed 1969 Topps Guy Rodgers or 1971 Topps Wayne Maki/Roger Crozier cards? Being a set collector is really a challenge on eBay.

For odd ball , insert and test items and cards I always check out Steve Werley's tables
    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955
    Fleer Baseball-1923, 1959-2007

My first National was 20 yrs ago and there was 900 tables!

    Daunting? Understatement!

My suggestion - take a pad and keep track of where you've been and table numbers of good prospects - after research is done?

Then go back to the best - and see how ya do? Hope ya have plenty of time and comfortable shoes!

    The entire experience? Incredible!
