1974/1976 Nolan Ryan PSA 10's

I have the opportunity to buy a '76 PSA 10 (Pop 4), and a '74 PSA 10, both Ryan's.
There are not enough VCP data points to price it accurately. What do you think they are worth right now ?

    I'm a buyer on the pair at $6000 - $6500

VCP on the 1976 were roughly $8100, $5650 and $4800 with the last recorded sale occuring in mid 2010 and the others going back to pre-recession

VCP on the 1974 was about $3350 in mid 2011 with the only prior recorded sale at $4150 in 2007

Given that the market has been somewhat strengthening I highly doubt you'd be able to get the pair at $6000-$6500.

IMO most likely you'd be looking at $5000-$5500 for the 1976 and $3800-$4000 for the 1974 as single cards. For the pair, I think you'd be getting
a close to market price/deal at between $8500-$9000.

I'd probably start with an offer of about $8k (just below the combined VCP) and see what the response is. You might get lucky, or you might get a
counter-offer. Anything below $8k just doesn;t seem very realistic unless the seller is in a must sell position.

Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

  • I would start at 6000 then work my way up

others may be buyers at a higher price than me, but the range I have is a realistic range for those 2 cards given they haven't sold in a while. Keep in mind that I don't overpay or get burned on things that often and all of my businesses are based on making profits and they all have done very well. If someone is looking to just buy them for their collection then it really doesn't matter what they are "worth", but for this exercise they are worth $6000-$6500 to me or anyone trying to buy them at a decent price. Also keep in mind that when you go to sell these higher end cards you are often looking at high commissions or seller fees so you have to factor that in on your buy price unless you want to be upside down.
  • Thanks for the info. When I've sold off high end stuff, I've used Brent at PWCC. I've had ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE success and his commission runs about 8% on
cards over 5K. Well worth the commissions !!

I'd love to buy at $6k-$6.5k too. Just don't see many sellers (unless they are in a rush to sell) coming in at below older VCP these days on high-end cards. Market has been
strengthening, not falling in the past 12 months. We just saw a 1970 PSA 9 Clemente get bit up to $1200 and not clear the reserve. The same card was selling between $650-$900 over the past year (not all sales were captured in VCP...don't know why, but I was an underbidder several times). That's just 1 example of many.

I agree that the 2006-2007 VCP price points are not even close, but I think only a desperate or uniformed seller would let that pair go today for anything less than $8k.

  • Thanks for all the input. Just wanted to bounce it off the board to verify what I;m paying. I am paying $6800 for both and I'll sell the 76 through PWCC
sometime this year. I had to buy as a pair, but I'm not interested in the '76.

    Good purchase!

I'll be interested in seeing what PWCC generates for you on the 1976.

  • If PWCC nets 4K, I'll be very happy with selling the Ryan. I highly suggest their services as he gets some insane prices. Last summer, I sent him a pile of cards and
calculated that I'd get about 15K back, based on VCP and commission. I ended up receiving a 20K check. For one particular SGC 96 Mantle, het got $3,300 more than I paid for it.
  • WOW, I looked up the '79 Ozzie when I saw the comment in this post. 20K ?? For what looks like a pretty weak 10.
    Unbelievable
