Mike's 5000's Post Contest - 2012 Oscars - Winner - mlbfan2! Perfect 8 for 8

Been 4+ years coming but it looks like I'll hit 5000 posts this week. Lots of changes in life and collecting habits since then. In December of 07, I was an independent film marketing exec in Hollywood that collected high grade 1961 Fleer Basketball and PSA Red Sox rookies. By 2009 the economy tanking crushed a lot of jobs in L.A. including mine and I never found a way back into marketing (sadly, I miss it). Somehow, through that, I got married to Mrs Coach (I call her that affectionately because we loved Friday Night Lights). Now, I'm a self employed Post Production Supervisor trying to scrape my way up to producing my own films (any millionaires please contact me - HA!!! - no, really, please do) and am almost strictly an autograph collector on a very limited budget.

Thanks to everyone that reads my posts. I hope I've been able to help some of you out the way you've come through for me over the years.

So here's the contest. I work in entertainment and The Oscars are a week from today. There are eight major categories. They are:

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Original Screenplay

1st Tiebreaker: Best Short Film (Animated)
2nd Tiebreaker: Best Short Film (Live Action)
3rd Tiebreaker: Total Number of Oscars that The Artist wins

Here are the Nominees if you don't know them:

I liked The Artist very much, but of the ones nominated I think The Descendants was the best I saw and The Help has the best chance at a "Miss Daisy". You'll know if The Help has a shot as soon as Best Supp Actress is announced. You'll also know The Artist is going to win if it wins the Editing award.

Winner receives a $25 credit to BBCE to purchase whatever they choose (or use as a discount on something else). I did this for a contest before and Steve H was perfectly fine with it. Good luck!

A few guesses here because I have about 4 movies left to watch before Sunday, including The Artist. From what I have seen to this point my favorite performance was Christopher Plummer and I really liked Midnight in Paris which does not stand a chance against The Artist and The Descendants. I wasn't crazy about The Help, while it was a good movie with many good performances I was not a fan of Viola Davis (even though I picked her to win) and I kind of thought that Bryce Dallas Howard was more deserving of a nomination that Jessica Chastain.
This week I will see The Artist, My Week with Marilyn, The Iron Lady and possibly War Horse. After seeing these I could regret my Viola davis pick. image

Getting closer to Oscar Sunday. Good luck to those that made choices. Contest will close at the start of the show. I've seen all Best Picture nominees. Here are my choices:

      Best Picture
WILL WIN: The Artist SHOULD WIN: The Help
The Artist was very good but it's too short, too silent, too black and white and a French production. It would defy a lot of Oscar history to win it (shortest BP winner in 20 years was Crash - 115 min. The Artist was 100 min). I thought The Help was the least flawed picture of these nine. Margin Call may have been the best movie of the year.

      Best Director
WILL WIN: Michel Hazanavicious SHOULD WIN: Michel Hazanavicious or Martin Scorsese
Malick's direction in Tree of Life was amazing but a montage film isn't winning for direction. Scorsese gets credit from me for doing a film that's markedly different from his entire catalogue. Hazanavicious wins because that was a much tougher film to direct than it's given credit for

      Best Actor
WILL WIN: George Clooney SHOULD WIN: Jean Dujardin
Dujardin is phenomenal but Hollywood awards an American actor in this year of the French production winning

      Best Actress
WILL WIN: Meryl Streep SHOULD WIN: Meryl Streep
Davis has a good chance but having won for Doubt a few years ago hurts her. Streep doesn't have a win since Sophie's Choice and is the best living actor (that's not an argument). The movie was not good but she was remarkable in it.

      Best Supporting Actor
WILL WIN: Christopher Plummer SHOULD WIN: Christopher Plummer
He's 82 and doesn't have an Oscar. This is a week year. Biggest lock on the board.

      Best Supporting Actress
WILL WIN: Octavia Spencer SHOULD WIN: Octavia Spencer
Her performance stands out among the other good ones in the film. Bejo has a shot but I doubt it.

      Best Adapted Screenplay
WILL WIN: The Descendants SHOULD WIN: Hugo
Hugo was very well written, probably better written than executed. Alexander Payne has one Oscar but the Academy loves him. He wins.

      Best Original Screenplay
WILL WIN: A Separation SHOULD WIN: A Separation
Don't get me wrong, the Academy wants to give it to Woody Allen but A Separation is a near lock to win Best Foreign Language Film. The voters don't have trouble giving screenplay to a foreign nominee. See: Amoldovar, Pedro. It would be looked at as an upset if it wins but if you can get it at Plus Odds, take the value every day of the week.

EDITED TO SAY: This was a very weak year for movies. Not one film from this year would make my Top 25 since 2000.

    • Congrats on your 5000th, Master Collector Mike. image
    • Best Picture - The Artist
      Best Director - Martin Scorsese
      Best Actor - Brad pitt
      Best Actress - Viola Davis
Best Supporting Actor - Max Von Sydow
Best Supporting Actress - Octavia Spencer
      Best Adapted Screenplay - Hugo
Best Original Screenplay - A Separation

1st Tiebreaker: Best Short Film (Animated) - La Luna
2nd Tiebreaker: Best Short Film (Live Action) - The Shore
3rd Tiebreaker: Total Number of Oscars that The Artist wins - 3

I know absolutely nothing about movies and these are just wild guesses. If I get 2 right it will surprise me. The last move I saw in a theater was Sleepy Hollow.

      Thanks for the chance,
      Ron

I feel it's the Year of Hugo. That was a wonderful film. However, I am seeing The Artist this weekend so I may have to edit some answers.
2.5 is pretty much my speed.
