Baseball HOF GU Collection Complete

In response to another members post here on the subject,I would like to share my HOF game used collection.I have been asked by a few to show it and figured I would start my own thread. It took a few years as some of these were very scarce so it took a bit of time and $$/trading to put together. To my knowledge it is 100% complete and up to date.

Jersey/worn cards were collected first. If the member did not have one, only then was a bat card collected. In some cases a bat was the members only GU card.By far the Leon Day and the Lloyd Waner were the toughest to find. Most Day Glove cards are kinda banged up at least the ones U have come across.I guess they were prone to heavy chipping so really happy with the one I was able snag.It looks to have some stitching above on it.Then came the Lloyd Waner aka little poison. There were only about 120 different cards from 2006 TTT that were made.I only know 2 others who own one.My Waner is sharing the card with Bonds and Clemente but still honored to have it .I am also a BIG Bonds collector which I am sure I will catch hell for but what are you going do.For those who are intrested the Josh Gibson is a seat relic.I did alot research on his bat cards which are only provided by Topps Co. Topps has made it very clear Josh Gibsons bat are from a Game Model bat only.Topps could not be certain it was ever used by Gibson. That being said I wanted to include him in the collection but to pay what others are paying for a piece of wood with no used relevance made no sense to me.

I'm open to questions and comments so let's hear em and very happy to have come across this forum as it looks very active which is hard to find these days. For those who are intrested I am also a member in good standing at SCF,FCB,The Bench,CCW and Ebay under the exact ID.

  • I am doing a GU PC in a similar fashion but in smaller scope (and not all HOFers). Are you finding yourself making additions now in the expectation that someone will join the HOF or do you wait until it's official?

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • Incredible!

Do you know of any HOFers that have an auto, but no gu/relics? Would you consider adding that your collection?
Looking for low #'d 2006 Marques Hagans + 1991 Wild Card stripes of UVA players - Tony Covington, Shawn Moore, Herman Moore
  • Thanks again guys.

There's alot of players with cuts but not really intrested as much as I was with the Game Used.

I know Cuts of Ruth,Mantle,William and plenty of others are to me ....untouchable.

Autos are great but I also wanted to be able to complete this one day

  • I was the other one, with the HOF GU collection, that posted my list. Great collection. We actually have a quite a bot of the same cards.

Thanks for doing this list ... I never knew Averill or Lloyd Waner had cards, so I'll have to look. The only one I had, that I didn't see on your list was Jimmy Collins. I have a 2002 Topps 206 bat ... not sure how many others he has.

Side note (I posted this question with my list) do you know about the Al Lopez Topps Tribute bat ? The 2010 Topps Tribute checklist has him as having a bat, but I've never seen one. I'm still waiting to hear back from Topps.

    First of all, awesome collection.

Second, is it just me, or is the photo on that Arky Vaughn card really great?

    Tabe
  • Hey bud,yes it was your collection and a great one at that.I do not know of an Al Lopez bat card existing. As far as the Jimmy Collins the card is an error. It's actually Eddie Collins but the printed the wrong name on the card. There's an article about it if you search google.

Plese let me know when you get your bucket up and running I would love to see the collection.

Wow, very nice! Thanks for sharing.
    Good for you.
  • This is a great collection, and one that I was also interested in doing. I have a lot of the cards myself already although not nearly close to what you have. Since you have already one this, I have some questions.

    (1) Why do you consider this "complete?" Obviously, there are a lot more HOFers that don't have game used cards yet. Or are these all of the different HOFers that are possible via Game Used today? I always wonder how the 1800s HOFers like Cap Anson and certain Negro Leaguers would ever get a GU card. Even certain important HOFers like Cy Young or Walter Johnson, I don't believe have GU cards yet.

    (2) You remark that you chose jersey cards first, and then bat cards, but you also mention the issue with the Josh Gibson card. Did you do any additional research in choosing which GU card of a certain player? This isn't an issue for most vintage or modern HOFers but more for prewar. How do you know that the jersey/bat is authentic, and it's not something similar to the Josh Gibson card? For example, there might be a Babe Ruth bat for sale, which was "only" authenticated as PSA/DNA 3, so it's on the very low end of authenticity. However, if a card manufacturer bought the bat and cut it up, they could theoretically claim it's an "authentic" bat because it still had a hint of authenticity. Did you have any idea whether one game used card from one manufacturer was better than another? Another example, and he's not a HOFer, but Joe Jackson. I have heard that his 2001 SP Legendary Cuts card is better than his other GU cards. I don't know if there is any information out there on which cards for certain stars are better. Another thing that I once saw was a bat barrel for Honus Wagner as part of a GU card for sale once on ebay. However, that bat barrel contained a decal, and it's known that players typically did not use decal bats in real games. So that led me to question whether or not Wagner bat cards were really from an authentic game used bat.
  • Thanks for the compliment. It's a great project and to me it was a great way to learn about amazing players I never much knew about that shaped the game.
I would consider it complete as these are the only members to date (up to Larkin) who have had a game used card made for them.Yes there are plenty of other members and from time to time they do appear.Case in point the Lloyd Waner bat card did not make a single apperance until 2006 Topps TTT.Following the hobby Waner is due for another card in the upcoming Prime Cuts being released by Pannini. So I guess with the addition of new members and older ones being reborn it will always be a work in progress.

The Josh Gibson bat card is the only of all members who have a game used in which the company did not guarantee it was Game Used and instead claimed it Game Model. As for the other 147 members who have a game used card of some sort.I prefer Jsy/Uni cards over bat myself,I think it's more personal but that's really just collector preferance. The autheniticity of the card lies with the card manufacturer.Do I have undoubtable proof it's real,no.I will say that I do think some jsy cards have a different significance than others. For instance Mickey Mantle fron an Allen & Ginter issue put out a jsy a relic that looks to be modern day similar to Jeter. This may have been an oldtimers Uni but certainly not from his playing days.In his case I wanted to make sure it was an older swatch with a pinstripe and did so for other players.Which cards to collect are up to the collector. Some cards mat be more desireable as those sets are of better quality and apperance. The 2001 SP Legendary Cuts and Update is a beautiful set so it's no question that J.Jackson's bat would be a top want. There are also players from that set like Gehringer and Simmons which that would be the only Game Used card made for them to date.
I guess at the end of the day you have to have some faith in what your doing.I am sure I have spent much more than I would get back so this was not an investment, rather a way to connect to players of the past. For those who are leary of authenticity this may not be a project for them.

    Gucd231,

Great project. Thanks very much for sharing your journey. Quite an accomplishment.

    Jeff
  • Gucd231,

Thanks for the response. That makes a lot of sense. Do you have a checklist (besides just viewing what you have scanned in this thread) of HOFer players who GU cards? Also besides this thread, which is static, do you have a link to your collection in case it changes in the future.

I was thinking if I were going to do this, to try to use the PSA Set Registry to display the cards. First, I sent some GU cards to be slabbed by PSA, but those came back really ugly especially with the really thick pack slabs. Therefore, I'm thinking that I'd use one of the HOF sets, and just use regular PSA cards for that player to get the slots. Because PSA allows you to use multiple pictures for a slot on the Registry, I'd also upload a separate scan of my GU card onto the slot, and then add any comments to it if warranteda.
  • I do have a list.I will Pm you with it tomorrow with a bucket link. Thanks again for the intrest.
  • Anyone else needing a list just PM me.

Looks like there is a new GU card from Walter Johnson now. (a baseball, maybe?) Not mine, and I did not win it. Link. Anyone know if there are other new GU cards from HOFers that weren't on the list before? Thanks!
