Topps is pathetic! Trying to profit off Gary Carter's Death!

Yes, they are giving 10% of the proceeds to the Gary Carter Foundation, but I still think it is pathetic. They should give 100%.

This could turn into a public relations nightmare! I hope it does.

They are marketing this page through their Facebook page:

Old photos and contracts, you would think Topps could bump up the donation to 75 - 100%!

Another reason not to like Topps!

Wow that 1975 Topps Signed Baseball Card Contract is pretty nice though.

Do we know if these are new listings since he died, or were they always there?
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.

Id rather have the team contract not for Topps or something like kelloggs cards. I dont like it either how they sell there stuff. If anything they should just put them in there new product as pulls or drawings or something.

They were probably always there, but the fact that they are marketing them through Facebook seems a little low class.

  • Anyone know who owns Topps? My 30 second internet search did not yield much. Strikes me as a family owned company. A publicly traded company would not be selling the items listed in this thread.

It used to be a public company and was bought by a buy out firm that I believe was led by Michael Eisner.

I will look and see if I can find any info.

Shareholder dispute and buyoutCriticism of the company's financial performance and flat stock price led two hedge funds holding 7.4% of the stock to launch a proxy fight in July 2006. Calling for better management of the company as the Topps Full Value Committee, they tried to place three members on the company's board of directors at the annual shareholder meeting. In a compromise with Topps, the three dissident shareholders were elected to the Topps board to replace two directors running for re-election, while CEO Arthur Shorin (son of Joseph) stayed on as a tenth member of the board.

The battle extended into 2007 with a $385 million buyout offer led by the firms Madison Dearborn and Tornante (an investment company started by former longtime Disney CEO Michael Eisner). The price of $9.75 per share was endorsed by Topps executives, but the dissident board members felt it undervalued the company and pushed to shop for other bidders. This led to discussions of a potential merger with the rival Upper Deck Company, which was prepared to buy Topps for $10.75 per share (a total of about $425 million). Topps management decided to reject this offer, citing concerns about the financing and potential antitrust regulation; Upper Deck pursued it for several more months but as a hostile takeover bid.

Upper Deck eventually withdrew its offer, complaining that Topps had impeded any reasonable efforts toward a merger. Meanwhile, a vote on the lower bid was delayed in the aftermath of Upper Deck's withdrawal, allowing management more time to lobby for shareholder support. The buyout was eventually approved in a special shareholders meeting by nearly two-thirds of the shares voting. The result was close, however, as the bloc voting for the deal was only a narrow majority of total shares outstanding, including those not voted (a requirement to complete the deal).

On October 12, 2007, Topps was acquired by Michael Eisner's Tornante Company and Madison Dearborn Partners.[6] Under Eisner's direction, Topps began to expand into the entertainment and media business with plans for a Bazooka Joe movie. Former television executive Staci Weiss began working with Tornante to develop projects based on Topps properties, including Garbage Pail Kids, Wacky Packages, Dinosaurs Attack!, Mech Warrior and Attax.[7]

The 'vault' has a regular following and I think they were just trying to do something nice - IMO.

I also do not see anything wrong with it. They are in the business to make money and there is probably as much interest in owning Gary Carter memorabilia now than there ever has been. Don't get me wrong, if they were disparaging Carter in ANY way, I'd say it was wrong. But the donation to his charity is a plus. MANY people sell items of ballplayers soon after their death but very few, IMO, give anything to charity.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • No concerns here. They could have posted those at any time and not donated anything at all. It's not like they put Gary Carter RIP/dead/deceased as some people probably will.
  • They should have waited awhile. This is in bad taste imo. Stick to cranking out the Jeremy Lin auto cards.
you're still livin in the sixties man!
  • the 10% doesn't bother me, if the 10% is 99% for profit and 1% well intentioned , then that's 1% more than before...

  • What's the problem? Anytime somebody decides to give to charity they should be praised not harrassed. Remember they didn't have to offer anything at all. Now because you think 10 percent is to cheap on there part you post this? If they are advertising on facebook or any where else for that matter is there business.
Geezz i get sick of crap like this. It's just like the people who say Oprah didn't give out enough charity donations compared to what she is worth. You should just be thankfull that they are giving 10 percent.
Tell you what, list your collection on e-bay and donate 10 percent ??

Yeah, I don't really see a problem here. This isn't Sony UK raising the price of Whitney Houston's albums immediately after her death.

My two favorite posts on the Topps Facebook page today... and yes, I agree with these posters! Sure, it's nice that Topps is giving anything to the Gary Carter Foundation... but when you really think about it, like these two collectors did... hmm....

"So let's see, the sale of the items will net $1,810.00 of which Topps will keep $1,629 while making a charitable contribution of $181 dollars. Seriously? Well, you can count my business gone. I hope that your profiteering off of a great mans passing was worth all the future business you just lost."

"So let me get this straight, it takes you forever to upload checklists and other important info to your website, but I go to get on there today and I see Gary Carter stuff for sale. You guys truly do suck and I hope MLB takes note and does not give you exclusive rights."

Might I add to the last posters beef... missing/poorly titled news posts on their website, constant downtime/failures with their different promotions site, and finally, shutting down eTopps.com and subsequently doubling shipping rates sticking 1000's of collectors with insane S&H charges to get items shipped which were already purchased (of which, half the cards sold in 2010 & 100% of cards sold in 2011 were still not available to ship before the doors closed and they jacked up the rates in January of 2012... SERIOUSLY, half of their 2010 product was not even printed and available for delivery until today... February freakin 17th of 2012!!!).

I also see nothing wrong with this.

No different than someone on my local corner slinging bootlegs of Whitney Houston and donating 10% to the local crack house. Okay, who am I kidding they are donating 100% of that money to the local crack house. Shame on you Topps.

Does your hardware store donate 10% of their sales to charity when they put snow shovels and rock salt out front when it snows?

  • It sounds like everyone on ebay. They are trying to proffit off his death also, but not giving anything to charity.

I just don't like Michael Eisner.

    Good for you.
  • I'm sure there are some Gary Carter fans out there who feel appreciative of the donation and the opportunity to pickup some one of a kind type items.

OP - why don't you sell your Jackie Robinson cards and donate 100% of those proceeds to his foundation?

  • Very nice gesture all around by Topps. Selling items that fans of Gary want, and donating to his charity. Class act.
