Anyone know how to cancel a Paypal payment sent?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,714 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ok, so one of my worse fears materialized. I sent what I thought was a fellow coin collector funds for a purchase. I missed one letter in his Paypal address and the money was sent to someone else.
I attempted to navigate paypal to find where I could simply cancel this payment sent in error but the menus became somewhat convoluted.

Anyone here who could direct me as to the proper procedure and, is there anything to worry about?

    Call Paypal right away.

  • If it's marked as a gift it's up in the air but you'll know that. I don't think a payment can be canceled as such without speaking to someone at paypal and having them do it.

If the email address you typed in bounces, you will receive a notice, but it won't be immediately. I've done it once before.

Not a gift- sent under "service" (it was in payment for consignments. The correct email was subsequently used so the right recipient wouldn't have to wait...).

Wouldn't you know it? The mistaken email is an active Paypal user (or, is at least registered).
I'm still navigating. As I use Paypal 5K+ a month I'm suppose to get some type of business account related service but for the life of me I don't even know where that is!

::Sheesh:: I swear, I'm so OCD about this kind of stuff I'm still kicking myself for not triple checking the address before sending.
Now, I take full responsibility, but wouldn't it be cool if Paypal had the page state who the money was going to before clicking the final SEND page?

keep saying "agent" until you get a drone
mention you also sent it to the correct account so they can see the problem

Go to the Security and protection tab and open a dispute on it.

Or call them if you can find their hidden number

It can be done, but you will need customer service as stated.

Had a guy call me once becuase he sent me a payment , that was supposed to go elsewhere. I would have gladly refunded, but he was able to get paypal to retract before I even attempted to refund him, so it can be done.

Just got off the phone. Talked to a real person. Super friendly and helpful. Problem quickly investigated and resolved!
I've never had to call paypal before and always kind of dreaded the day I just may have too but honestly, it was not a painful experience as I thought it would be.

Glad it was resolved in a good way, and you don't get heartburn over it tonight image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • As much as I hate the hold on funds, paypal customer service has been very helpful. I was worried about a 0 feedback buyer on a fairly expensive item. The CSA offered to call me when the item was delivered and the funds released - he actually followed up and called me. Very impressed.

paypal is 1000 times more helpful than ebay. I have an account rep who used to know me by name when I was dealing with a few chargebacks (all of which I won). --Jerry

    Thanks guys.
Surprisingly, the wrong recipient had no problem accepting the funds (no small amount) and depositing into his account between the couple of hours I realized my error and Paypal resolved it.

You don't have to accept, they just go in. Or am I missing something? He would have gotten an email. If I'd seen such an email on my phone and I wasn't expecting a payment from anyone, I would assume it is a phishing scam and made a mental note to look at it next time I logged into paypal. --Jerry

Pat may mean into his "bank" account. Ie....initiated the transfer from paypal account into bank account. Pat can correct me if I am wrong, but that is how I read it.

Jerry, yes the payment is automatic to his payment account. What he did was transfer the funds from his Paypal account to his bank account.
That was purposeful and difficult to believe he thought all along the funds were his to keep.

  • It's a good thing you were right on it , i'd guess his next move would have been shut down the paypal account the minute the money made it to his bank.3 days i think..or it used to be.

Clearly wrong. He had to realize they weren't his and somebody was getting hosed over it. Glad it worked out.
