if you want to measure the importance of a man within his culture, look no further.

even if the team he played for wasn't one of my favorites, it was tough not to enjoy watching the guy......he played like the way we try to teach our kids on Little League grass and dirt.

    all the time.

rest well Gary, you'll be missed. if you see my dog up there in Heaven, please pat her on the head and toss her a ball. thanks.

It has taken me awhile to find a way to express my feelings over the past week and I hope you don't mind me sharing my thoughts

    How Do I Say Goodbye…..

It has been one week since Gary Carter passed away and I have been trying to find the right words to express the impact that Gary has had on my life. I would like to think that I am THE number one Gary Carter fan but I am confident that there are millions of others who would like to debate that claim. Watching the outpouring of love from family, friends, fans and personalities has made it a bit easier but there is still sadness to his passing. Do not get me wrong. I am not sad that Gary has passed, for he lived every day of his 57 years for the purpose of meeting his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I know that has happened and this should be rejoiced. My sadness is completely selfish, I am sad to know that he is just not here anymore – he had been a constant in my life for over 30 years. He was that superstar that responded to my autograph request when I was twelve and I was in awe that he sent it back to me personalized. He was the answer to a sports fan’s dream when he came to my team and provided some of the biggest sports related moments in my life. He was the down to earth person that went out of his way to make me feel comfortable when I had the chance to meet him for the first time. He was a man of character. When it came time for my wife and I to name our first born son, there was absolutely no hesitation in naming him Carter. He was a man of pure kindness that opened his home to complete strangers in order to share and celebrate the joyous news of a friend. He was a devout Christian who lived every day to be closer to God and at the same time be an example to hundreds in showing how wonderful life is. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to have met with Gary and my memories will be cherished as long as I live.

So after writing 400+ words in an attempt to find a proper way to say goodbye, I am not going to. Instead I will borrow a phrase that Gary has added to his signature tens of thousands of times.

    “Gary --- Catch Ya Later”

Mike ... it's refreshing to hear that an athlete had such a positive effect on one of his fans. I'm sure "Little Carter" will be a constant reminder of how Gary affected your life.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Mike, beautifully said and well thought out. I'm sure Gary is very proud of the impact he made on everyone he touched (unless he was blocking the plate, of course), not just in baseball but in life as well. I'm glad he got to see his team one last time before he had to go. You could tell how happy he was to be there and the impact he had on his players.

    Catch ya later Gary!!!

  • Very appropriate response Mike. I can only imagine how/what you must be feeling. Gary Carter was one heck of a player, and an even greater human being.

Would have been nice for them to retire his jersey last year. Perhaps he couldn't make it due to his treatment, but if they didn't ask him, it's a disgrace.
