Big80s on the 80s

Hey friends,

Inspired by some cards that have been shared on other threads recently - I decided I needed to pick up a few items that meant a lot to me as a kid. As an adult, I love to collect vintage cards, but I don't have nearly the personal connection to those cards that I do to the cards of the 80s (specifically 1985 Topps). In celebration of the 80s and the fact that my wonderful wife bought me a new scanner (Epson V330) for Valentine's Day - I wanted to share a couple of recent pickups that have a lot of meaning to me - and I hope you guys will share some, as well.

1985 Topps was the first set I collected. Packs were $.50 and my buddy Kelly and I would ride our bikes to the 7-11 near us to buy as many packs as we could. The big hit was Dwight Gooden. I have also always loved Kirby Puckett. I found the autos when searching for the Topps Gooden and I just couldn't pass them up for the price. On a side note - I'm not a huge auto collector - is it bad to scan an autographed card? Just curious.

Thanks for letting me share.

Nice cards....Thanks for sharing your story. It is much like mine. I started in '83 and I too hit 7-11 as much as I could. Thankfully my mom never threw any of them away so I still have them. It's a blast looking at them and remembering the excitement I had opening them up and looking for that "special" card.... Ron Kittle, anyone?

Ron Kittle was a big hit - I also remember Alvin Davis and Eric Davis being awesome cards in '85. Of course, Darryl Strawberry had the wow-factor, as well.

  • I think the 85 Swawon Dunston RC's should get more respect.
Grew up a Cubs and Bears fan though.

  • It was 86 I think, man that was the year of pitchers back then. You had Clemens, The Doc, Orel, what happened to the last 26/27 years....

Very nice cards Jeff - thanx for sharing.

1985 was the first year I thought about getting into the hobby since I was a kid.

However, I wasn't sure what I wanted to collect - so I stood on the sidelines - pretty much for about 4 yrs - buying very little - then around 1988 or 89 I got more seriously into cards - mainly due to my son wanted me to take him to card shops and flea markets.

We all know how important it was for Fleer and Donruss to get into the game in '81 - as I've said before - I sure wish Fleer had produced a 2nd series in '63.
