Q: what would happen if you sent a coin to PCGS/NGC as, say, an Express grading and...

...it turned out to grade as a $15,000 coin, instead of the $500 coin you thought it was, due to the grade being better than you thought...

Would PCGS/NGC ask you to pay the difference in grading tiers after the fact?

  • I asked a similar question earlier, and was told on the submission form, you are stating what you paid for the coin, both for submission and for return shipping.

If it turns out to be worth more due to the grade, you benefit.

    . . . . at least that's what I was told. . .

Now I could think of a few scenarios that this "shouldn't" apply (such as if you inherit a coin), but not sure how to deal with that.

I would be more worried, that the coin is being shipped back with only $500 insurance. I would call and find out what is the best way to handle it.

I base my certifications on the price I paid, so what it turns out to be is what it is. It can work both ways you know. You can pay a ton for a coin for it to be not as nice as you thought.

If I got a 30-bagger, I would cheerfully ask if there was an additional grading charge as I was upping the amount I was paying for return shipment.

$15K is certainly within the value limit for express service. Is it possible to contact them before they ship after you find out the grade or is it too late by then? Not sure why anyone would go express on a $500 coin if they didn't have a clue about how good it really was.

They'll probably get on your case if they think you are trying to push pricey coins through on a lower service level.

Thanks all. Great responses and good points. I wish this were a real problem of mine, but alas, it is just me pondering. image

The other half of the story would be that after that initial high grade was given the coin went on down the line and the guy running the sonic sealer drops it and it gets a big old rim ding.
What amount do you think PCGS is legally liable to pay you for the coin?

Or as David once said at what point do you want us to buy the coin he seemed to be aiming that remark at someone IIRC.
