Doily?????????

If it is true that many dealers cracked off the outer ring/s [2.0, 2.5 and 3.5 as well] so that they would fit into the rattler boxes, why is there such a paucity of those holders without the ring? Were they cracked out completely? The ringless ones appear to be the scarce ones.

Never heard that before.
Perhaps an odd collector or two . . .but not the majority . . . IMHO.

That was espoused by someone [not me] a couple years ago. I can assume in 1989/90 that there weren't any of today's style boxes in which to keep them.
Not that all of them were cracked open but some of them were done.
But also keep in mind that many of the doilies were then cracked open entirely around 1996 and 1997 to resubmit for higher grades at NGC and/or PCGS.
This is why they are scarce.
But the supply can always be increased by busting open the outer shell of these doilies.
On the other hand, many of these doilies have been "repaired" by putting extra outer rings laying around or from other very old holders.
I know, I have done it quite a few times. Also, I have a couple of extra outer rings left.
The one that was sold to me is a gag gift one that falls apart in your hands and can be put back into place.
I sure like the rattler boxes for the rattlers - they stay where they belong.
I can't see after all the 2.0 and 2.5 holders that there would be a shortage of the new style/size boxes.
Seems odd that you see more 3.0's with the outer rim missing than you do 2.0's or 2.5's.
